On Sunday, July 21, President Joe Biden announced that he was dropping out of the presidential race and is endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s nominee. Following those announcements, a bevy of Hollywood stars, including Robert De Niro, Bette Midler, Mark Ruffalo, Mark Hamill, and Cher, jumped in to comment on the matter.
As background, Biden, announcing he was dropping out, posted on X, “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
Mark Hamill, the Luke Skywalker actor who is now known mainly for his far-left views, responded to Biden’s announcement by saying, “@JoeBiden has a record of accomplishments unmatched by any president in our lifetime. He restored honesty, dignity & integrity to the office after 4 years of lies, crime, scandal & chaos. Thank you for your service, Mr. President. It’s now our duty as patriotic Americans to elect the Democrat who will honor & further your legacy. #VoteBlue2024ProtectDemocracy 🇺🇸”
Then, in another post about Harris, Hamill wrote that he would be fully supporting her in the 2024 race, saying, “I want to offer my full support & endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year”-@JoeBiden🇺🇸 Vote for the candidate who will both honor & further his legacy: @KamalaHarris #HamillHeartsHarris 🫶”
Mark Ruffalo supported Harris by mocking Trump’s age, saying, “Trump is too old and of terrible personal character to be President. He just can’t be trusted or relied on and he is always falling asleep on the job. We need a young President who isn’t a convicted criminal to be President. How did the Republicans not see this??”
In another post, this one a response to Biden dropping out, Ruffalo wrote, “Okay everybody, now we have our marching orders and time to hit the trail running. No to Trump/Vance. No to the right-wing Christian religious takeover of our nation. Nothing wrong with Christianity; just shouldn’t be running a nation birthed from freedom of religion.”
Also commenting on the matter was Robert De Niro, who said, “In an act of shrewd politics and selfless patriotism, Joe Biden is stepping aside to clear the path for another Democrat to become president . . . because there is nothing more important for our country than defeating Donald Trump at the ballot box. With respect, admiration, and affection, thank you Mr. President!”
Bette Middler, another woke actress, joined in as well. She said, “Joe Biden is a true American patriot. He’s been a fantastic President, and it hurts that the circumstances have been so unique and historic that he was obliged to drop out. He is the rarest of politicians, a decent man who lived by his values.” In another post, she wrote, “So of course, the ever gracious Trump gives Biden another kick with his hobnailed boot as Biden steps down: ‘Joe Biden was the worst president in history’…but as we all know, with DJT, every accusation is a confession. Thanks for the confirmation, schmuck!”
Singer Cher joined in as well, writing, “Hadn’t Seen TV/Talked 2 Anyone,So Didn’t Know It Had Happened.I Believe Its Only Chance 4🇺🇸 2 Remain DEMOCRACY. DEM PARTY MUST”REALLY,” ”REALLY” THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX. “WINNING IS ALL”,DONT WIN CANT CHANGE ANYTHING & THE TIMES THEY MUST BE A CHANGIN”
