During the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was loudly booed during the event’s programming. Conservatives have long criticized McConnell as a “Republican in Name Only” who does not support some of the GOP’s contemporary interests that align with red voters.
McConnell served as the chair of the Kentucky Delegation for the RNC, announcing that the state’s delegates would go toward former President Donald Trump. “Madame Chairman, the Commonwealth of Kentucky proudly casts 46 votes for the next president, Donald J. Trump,” McConnell stated. Despite casting his state’s delegates for nominating Trump, he was booed by some members of the crowd.
McConnell has been criticized for his stance on issues such as January 6, in which he blamed Donald Trump in February 2021. The Kentucky Republican suggested that Trump was “practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of that day.” Trump has also slammed McConnell for allowing Democrat spending initiatives in Congress.
The GOP senate minority leader has also faced criticism over his continual support for providing support to Ukraine in its war with Russia. The U.S. has sent roughly $175 billion in taxpayer-funded aid, which is deeply unpopular with American voters. “[The Ukrainians] know they need to have some signs of success here, which will reassure the democratic countries that they can win. The conflict over the summer and how it is perceived to turn out is extremely important in answering the question inevitably coming up in democracies — can they win?” McConnell said.
In contrast, the energy behind former President Donald Trump at the convention was palpable who had just come off the attempt on his life during his fateful rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. On Thursday night, Trump delivered a powerful, hour-and-a-half-long speech when officially accepting the nomination to represent the party in November.
Trump said, “I stand before you this evening with a message of confidence, strength, and hope. Four months from now, we will have an incredible victory, and we will begin the four greatest years in the history of our country. Together, we will launch a new era of safety, prosperity and freedom for citizens of every race, religion, color, and creed. The discord and division in our society must be healed. As Americans, we are bound together by a single fate and a shared destiny. We rise together. Or we fall apart.”
He continued, “To all of the forgotten men and women who have been neglected, abandoned, and left behind, you will be forgotten no longer. We will press forward, and together, we will WIN, WIN, WIN. Nothing will sway us. Nothing will slow us. And no one will stop us. No matter what dangers come our way, no matter what obstacles lie in our path, we will keep striving toward our shared and glorious destiny—and WE WILL NOT FAIL. Together, we will SAVE THIS COUNTRY, we will restore the Republic, and we will usher in the rich and wonderful tomorrows that our people truly deserve.”
