Golf legend Tiger Woods recently commented on the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump as he arrived at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland for The Open Championship this week. Woods claimed that the rally shooting caused him to lose sleep on his flight to Scotland from Florida. The professional golfer also stated he was not “in the right frame of mind” ahead of the tournament.
Last Saturday, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired multiple rounds at Trump from a nearby rooftop that had a line of sight toward the former President. Miraculously, Trump only walked away, where only one of the bullets grazed his ear as he turned his head at the perfect moment to avoid what would have certainly been a fatal headshot.
“I didn’t accomplish a lot because I wasn’t in the right frame of mind,” Woods said, explaining how it affected his playing in the tournament. “It was a long night [because of the assassination attempt] and that’s all we watched the entire time on the way over here. I didn’t sleep at all on the flight, and then we just got on the golf course.”
The horrific attempt on Trump’s life has drawn commentary from a number of prominent figures, particularly in the world of sports. The American Tribune previously reported on the response from various sports stars who extended their thoughts and prayers to the Republican presidential candidate after he was millimeters away from certain death.
Professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau wrote on X, “Violence deserves no place in this world. Praying for President Trump and his family. Wishing for a speedy recovery.” Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III wrote on X, “I don’t care how much you love or hate President Donald Trump, now is not the time to play politics. Pray for him, his family and anyone else impacted by today’s shooting.” Sports commentator Rich Eisen commented, “Thank you to the heroes of the Secret Service who threw themselves into what appeared to be a hail of bullets. Find whoever did this and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. None of this is OK. Praying for everyone there in Butler PA.”
Professional fighter Connor McGregor, who has reportedly endorsed Trump, wrote on social media, “A 78 year old multiple billionaire he should be on a yacht on the med touring golf courses. But he is not. He is in Pennsylvania spitting out bullets! Running for the love of his country! God speed Donald! God bless the United States.”
Shortly after his attempted assassination Trump addressed the event on Truth Social. “I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!” Trump wrote.
