During former President Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday evening, the nation was rattled to its core when an assassination attempt was carried out against the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. Trump miraculously walked away from the attack, only having a bullet graze his ear.
However, one Trump supporter behind the former president in the grandstands was struck in the head by the gunfire, dying from his injuries. The man has been identified as 50-year-old former Buffalo Township Fire Chief Corey Comperatore who attended the rally with his family. The native of Sarver, Pennsylvania, Comperatore is survived by his wife, daughter, mother, and sisters.
Witnesses illustrated how they attempted to administer life-saving efforts to Comperatore after it was discovered he had been shot. An emergency room doctor sitting near the former fire chief explained, “I heard the shots. I thought it was firecrackers to begin with. Somebody over there was screaming, ‘he’s been shot, he’s been shot.’ So I made my way over. I said, I’m an emergency department physician.”
The physician further recalled saying, “Let me help you,” before adding, “The guy had spun around and was jammed between the benches. He had a head shot here. There was lots of blood. And he had brain matter there.” Despite the apparent fatal headshot, the doctor said they performed CPR and chest compressions until first responders took him away on a stretcher.
Reportedly, Compertore died a hero as he was protecting his daughter from the barrage of gunfire from the shooter, who has been identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, before being fatally struck. Comperatore’s family has honored his memory in the aftermath of his tragic death at the Trump rally.
“The PA Trump Rally claimed the life of my brother, Corey Comperatore. The hatred for one man took the life of the one man we loved the most. He was a hero that shielded his daughters. His wife and girls just lived through the unthinkable and unimaginable,” his sister, Dawn, said in a Facebook post. “The PA Trump Rally claimed the life of my brother, Corey Comperatore. The hatred for one man took the life of the one man we loved the most.”
Furthermore, Comperatore’s daughter, Allyson, whom he laid his life down for also honored her father in a Facebook post. “He was the best dad a girl could ever ask for. My sister and I never needed for anything. You call, he would answer, and he would do whatever it is you needed, and if he didn’t know you, he would figure out how,” she wrote.
Allyson added that her dad died a “super-hero” for his selfless actions to protect them. “The media will not tell you that he died a real-life super hero. They are not going to tell you how quickly he threw my mom and I to the ground. They are not going to tell you that he shielded my body from the bullet that came for us. And I want nothing more than to cry on him and tell him thank you.”
