In something of a change of pace for the normally out-of-the-news and political spotlight former First Lady, Melania Trump, she got involved in the Trump 2024 campaign on Monday, July 8, hosting a fundraiser for the Log Cabin Republicans at Trump Tower in New York City. The fundraiser was a rare public appearance for her.
The New York Sun reported that Katherine Jellison, an American historian who focuses on first ladies, said that Melania might have decided to make a rare appearance and host the event because it is an issue she thinks outreach to the group is needed to help get her husband over the finish line and that she sees herself as being the more appropriate person to host the event.
Jellison said, “I would say that this might be an issue that she personally cares about and if no one else is doing outreach to this group of Republicans and fundraisers then this is something that she would do. Maybe the Trump campaign wants to do outreach to the Log Cabin Republicans and realizes that Trump himself would not be the most appropriate person to do that.”
Explaining previously to Fox News Digital that her goal with Log Cabin Republicans events is to inspire a nation focused on preserving equality and freedom, Melania said, “We must unite in our effort to establish a society where equality is the everyday experience of every American.” She continued, “Individual freedom provides a unifying set of principles, and ultimately establishes our American way.”
She further expressed the need to protect fundamental American values such as “liberty” and “individualism.” Melania stated, “Together, we must nourish and safeguard the seeds of liberty. Because, when successful, America blossoms into a magnificent place where everyone can practice their beliefs, share new ideas, and express individualism — this is when we are our best.”
Former President Trump has formerly spoken about Melania’s lack of interest in public events and campaigning but her willingness to do it for the country. He said, “It’s funny, she was a very successful model, very, very successful, and yet she was a private person. She’s going to be out a lot. Not because she likes doing it, but she likes the results.” Continuing, he added, “She wants to see this country really succeed. She loves the country.” Trump also told Ingraham, “Melania is a brilliant person. Her life revolves around Barron and the success of our country.”
Continuing, Trump re-emphasized Melania’s essentially private nature compared to other First Ladies. He said, “You know, a lot of first ladies would go out — they want to be everywhere. They get angry at their husband because he’s not introducing them.” He then continued, “If I didn’t introduce Melania, she’d be very happy about it. She’s just a different kind of a person.”
Further, speaking about Melania’s care in raising Barron Trump and how she balances that with her love of country and near-constant charity work, he said, “Her life revolves around that boy. It’s so important to her.” He added, “At the same time, it also revolves around our country and the success of our country. She’s raised a lot of money for charity. She’s a private person.”
And, returning to his point about how she doesn’t like being in public but will do so because helping him win is important for the country, Trump added, “And she loves the country. She’s going to be out a lot, but she does it for the good of the country, not for her. She’s somebody with a lot of confidence. She doesn’t need that.”
