In powerful comments on the unrest around the world, particularly the brutal and tragic Russo-Ukraine War, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary spoke about American policy in the matter, namely its seeming lack of interest in securing peace. He also gave what was effectively an endorsement of former President Donald Trump, calling him a “man of peace.”
As background, Orban is a favorite of many on the MAGA right and similar spheres, given his tough stance on migration, his pro-natalist policies, and his general willingness to resist the Globalist American Empire’s woke agenda. His comments on Trump and the Russo-Ukraine War came in the run-up to the NATO summit, during which leaders will certainly discuss the disastrous and bloody war.
In his comments on the war, Orban contrasted what he sees as an American interest in pushing the war along with what he sees as a credible “peace plan” that has been put forward by China. He also defended his outreach to Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that it is highly necessary given the current war in the Ukraine.
Commenting on the contrast between America’s approach and China’s while taking the opportunity to call on Europe to recognize its own interests and push them, he said, “China has a peace plan. America runs a war policy. And Europe, instead of having our autonomous strategic approach and position, we are simply copying the American position.”
He also, during the interview, spoke about former President Donald Trump, President Biden, and American politics, saying that he sees there as being a “very, very high chance” that President Joe Biden will lose his re-election race come November, saying that such would be a highly positive outcome given who the two candidates are.
Saying as much, Orban argued that a Trump victory would be a good thing for the whole world, saying, “I’m sure that a change would be good for the world.” Continuing, Orban praised Trump in highly positive terms, describing him as a “self-made man” who is creative in that he manages to have a “different approach to everything.”
Then, speaking about the critical issue of peace and ending the war, he added that Trump will help bring about such a peace. “I believe that will be good for the world politics,” he said. He continued, “He is the man of peace. Under his four-year term he did not initiate a single war, and he did a lot in order to create peace in old conflicts in very complicated areas of the world.” Similarly, when asked about Trump’s peace plan, he said, “I think new leadership will provide new chances.”
Speaking about his own role in trying to end the war while not making judgement comments on which party is responsible, Orban said, “The job for me now is not to say … who is good, who is bad. The situation is obvious. But I would not like to be indulged [in] a kind of measurement, who is responsible for what, and so on. My duty is to concentrate on how we can create peace.”
