Speaking during his keynote address at the “2024 Road to Majority” conference hosted by the Faith & Freedom Coalition, former President Donald Trump went on the attack against President Joe Biden, arguing that his administration and the various agencies of the executive branch are on the attack against Christians in the United States, particularly Catholics.
As background, Trump’s comments came on Saturday, June 22. At the event, he spoke alongside numerous other high-profile conservatives and Vice President potential picks, including Dr. Ben Carson, Tulsi Gabbard, and U.S. Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, with the main focus of the event being on why Christians should support conservative political candidates.
Former President Trump, doing his part to push that message, told the crowd that the far-left is incredibly anti-Christian in its views and inclinations, telling the crowd, “The radical left will always come after religious believers… because they know that our allegiance is not to them… our allegiance is to our country and our allegiance is to our Creator.”
He also alleged that President Joe Biden is on the attack against Catholics despite claiming to be a faithful Catholic. He said, “And I don’t know, it’s a little bit less to do with this room, but we all care. What’s going on with Catholics?” He continued, “They are being persecuted… by (Joe Biden). This man that has no idea what the hell is happening.”
Trump further pledged to protect Christians, saying, “We will protect Christians in our schools and our military and our government, our workplaces, in our hospitals, and in our public square.” He also said, making much the same pledge, “Never again will the federal government be used to target religious believers.”
Watch him here:
That was likely a reference to the FBI memo from the Richmond field office that noted that traditionalist Catholics could be “extremist” in their views, painting them as potentially in need of being surveilled or otherwise thought of as domestic extremists. Specifically, the memo warned of “radical-traditionalist Catholic ideology” being of interest to extremists.
Rep. Jim Jordan, commenting on that matter, said, “Well, first, they told us it was just one field office, the Richmond field office. Then we learned that oh, no, no, it was bigger than that. It was multiple field offices involved in this attack on pro-life Catholics. And now, we learn as you pointed out, Sean, that the FBI was talking to a priest and a choir director.”
Continuing, Rep. Jordan added, speaking about the matter to FNC’s Sean Hannity, “Now, again, remember the larger context, this is the same FBI that spied on President Trump’s campaign. This is the same FBI that censored Americans. This is the same FBI, on this particular issue, that went to Mark Houck’s home, a pro-life Catholic, arrested him in his home in front of his wife and seven children. When that case goes to court, Mark Houck wins, which is that’s how ridiculous this all is. So that’s what our report spells out.”
Trump spoke about the memo with Hannity as well, telling him, “Christians and Americans of faith are being persecuted like nothing this nation has ever seen before.” He added, “I don’t know what’s going on with the Catholics,” and that President Biden has “weaponized the FBI and the DOJ to go get his political opponents and many other people.”
Trump also said, in a post on his Truth Social social media platform, that Christians are under attack. He wrote, “Under Crooked Joe Biden, Christians and Americans of faith are being persecuted like this nation has ever seen before. Catholics in particular are being targeted and evangelicals are surely on the watchlist as well.”
