According to a recent report in Axios, things inside the Democratic Party are heating up as those in the inner circle worry that his campaign is headed in the wrong direction, pursuing a losing strategy as he tries to squeak out a win against former President Donald Trump. Particularly, they fear that his current strategy is focusing on the wrong things.
The Axios report notes that, as of now, the Biden Campaign is mainly focused on things like the Capitol Riot in January of 2021 and things like what they see as Trump’s personal character as shown by the recent court cases, including the loss in New York. Along with those messages comes the constant messaging about Trump being a “threat to democracy.”
Axios then noted that, while the core group of Biden’s circle “hasn’t lost faith” in the “our democracy,” Jan. 6., and personal character approach, they are at odds in that respect with many other in the Democratic party. In fact, Axios said that they are, in supporting Biden’s strategy, “on an island” amongst other Democrats as those other party insiders get worried about Trump’s strength in the polls against Biden.
In fact, speaking about the issue to Axios, a Democratic strategist in touch with the Biden campaign said that the Biden Campaign seems unaware of how badly things are going. The strategist said, “It is unclear to many of us watching from the outside whether the president and his core team realize how dire the situation is right now, and whether they even have a plan to fix it. That is scary.”
Another indicated that those in the Biden camp who realize what is going on are often unwilling to point it out for fear of being attacked by others. That anonymous insider said, “Even for those close to the center, there is a hesitance to raise skepticism or doubt about the current path, for fear of being viewed as disloyal.” He added, further indicating that the Biden Campaign isn’t taking Biden’s polling weakness seriously, “There is not a discussion that a change of course is needed.”
Further explaining the matter and indicating why Americans are souring on Biden’s message, Axios also noted that polls show voters are somewhat concerned with “democracy,” but are far more concerned with “inflation” and “the economy,” issues on which former President Donald Trump tends to receive more support than President Biden.
While some of those who spoke to Axios were positive about the matter, saying that Biden’s message is on point and could win, the general message was Biden is not heading in the right direction. Among those who said so was longtime Democratic strategist Howard Wolfson. He said, speaking to Axios, “If the election were today, we would lose. Can that change? Yes. Is it on the path to do so? I don’t see that yet.”
Another issue, though one left unmentioned by the Axios article, is that Biden’s old age is becoming an increasing issue as he struggles in public and, thanks to many video of those incidents, Americans take note and worry about it.
