Speaking during an interview on Wednesday, June 12, on “Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa,” 78-year-old actress Goldie Hawn spoke about her repeated run-ins with crime in her home city of Los Angeles. Specifically, she said that she has had to deal with multiple break-ins and so is thinking about moving away from the city in which she has lived for many years.
The crime problem came up when, speaking to Ripa, Hawn said that she and her longtime partner Kurt Russell were out to dinner one night when their house was broken into and robbed. A second break-in also occurred. She said that, as a result, they’re considering moving out of Los Angeles and to Palm Desert, which is safer.
Beginning with the comment about Palm Desert, Hawn said, “What if we couldn’t live in LA, where would we live? We both decided, I think it’s Palm Desert. … It’s so safe.” She added, broaching the subject of the robbery she and Russell experienced while out to dinner, “It’s just ’cause L.A. is terrible. I mean, we were robbed once.”
She continued, describing getting back home from dinner and finding that robbers had made their way into the house and searched through their rooms, saying, “We came back and went in the house. I went up to the stairs and I walked into my closet. I just lost it. They had broken in from the balcony to our bedroom, our closets.”
She then noted that the robbers must have been “sophisticated,” as they managed to break through her “safe door,” which is supposedly harder to get through, and took her “goodies.” She said, “And they completely knocked down my door, which is a safe door, so they’re very, very sophisticated, and they got a lot of my goodies, if you know what I mean.”
Initially, she thought that the incident, though frightening given the apparent sophistication of the robbers in getting through her door, was a one-off and wouldn’t be happening again. “So, I’m thinking, ‘Oh, my God, so the chances are, I guess that’s it,'” she said. “It’s gotta be. The odds are that’s not gonna happen again,” she said.
But then another incident occurred. “I hear this big thump upstairs — and I was alone; Kurt wasn’t there — and I went, ‘What the hell was that?'” she said. She added, “It was just like, was that a sonic boom? Did somebody jump somewhere? And as it turned out, the next day, we discovered that they were trying to get in my bedroom while I was in the house.”
So, now they are thinking about moving away from Los Angeles and Hawn now employs a security guard who helps keep her safe, particularly when Russell is gone and she is home alone. Describing that, she said, “I’ve had a guard, especially when I’m alone now. I’m never without a guard. We have a nice relationship with our guard.”
Hawn’s comments come as LA takes heat for rising crime about which the city appears to be doing little, or at least not enough. Mayor Karen Bass, however, insists that she is taking steps to keep the city safer, saying, “My No. 1 job is to keep Angelenos safe. During my first year, we have taken urgent action to address the LAPD hiring and retention crisis as well as invested in proven community-led approaches to address crime. There is still much more work to do and many Angelenos who do not feel safe. Together, we will continue implementing our comprehensive approach to public safety.”
