Comedian Bill Maher recently criticized the modern progressive left in an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria. Maher addressed criticism from liberals irritated by his heightened disdain for the left. The comic, known for his bipartisan criticism, has recently made headlines in conservative media for focusing his attention on the left. As a result, younger liberals have claimed that Maher has “matured” and abandoned the values he once held.
Maher succinctly rebuked this criticism, maintaining, “It’s not that I’ve gotten old. Your ideas are stupid.” The “Real Time with Bill Maher” host emphasized that, regardless of politics, he would “call it out” when he encounters something he disagrees with. Maher told Zakaria, “So I’m going to call it out wherever I see it.”
The comedian proceeded to list off political phenomena coming from the left, such as the deconstruction of gender, ideas toward health, and pro-communist sentiment, that he vehemently opposes. He continued, “I mean, there are things that have to do with, you know, gender and race and free speech and just ideas about, you know, you can be healthy at any weight and gender is always a social construct. And maybe we should give communism another try, and maybe we should get rid of capitalism and the Border Patrol, and let’s tear down statues of Lincoln and get rid of the police just, you know, no, it’s not that I’ve gotten old, it’s that your ideas are stupid, okay?”
During the interview, Maher maintained that he hasn’t changed, but the left has. However, he also made it clear that he was not a supporter of the right, which he claimed was also devolving. “I haven’t turned. Yes, people have said to me, you make fun of the left more than you used to, and guilty I have because the left has changed now,” he said.
The American Tribune also reported on Maher’s comments last month when he appeared on ABC’s “The View.” Maher maintained that people who refuse to criticize Biden while dishing it out to former President Donald Trump lose their credibility.
Maher clarified that he is not endorsing Republicans, where he views Trump as a danger. “Of course, I mean, I don’t think anybody was more out front on that danger than I was. I was talking about how he was never gonna give up power. Long ago when everybody was laughing at me and said, You smoke too much pot and they said I smoke just the right amount of I was using the term slow moving cool before he was elected the first time that’s fine. So this guy is never going to concede power. It’s impossible to imagine him going, ‘Oh, I lost,’ you can’t do it. He just, that’s just not in his nature,” he told the panel.
However, he emphasized that one’s credibility is drawn into question when not equally calling out President Biden. “I think you lose all credibility,” he added. “I do. I mean, my bond with my audience has always been [that] I don’t pull a punch. My bond with my audience is you’re not gonna like everything I say, but you know I’m saying what I really think is true.” Watch Maher’s interview with CNN below:
