Country singer Maren Morris recently announced on social media that she is bisexual following her divorce from her husband, Ryan Hurd, at the beginning of the year. Morris has been known for her liberal stances on issues in the culture war.
The musician posted a message on Instagram this past Sunday that read, “Happy to be the B in LGBTQ+, happy pride!’” with an accompanying rainbow emoji. The post featured several images of her, one of which shows her holding a pride flag. According to her caption, the photos appear to revolve around a performance in Phoenix, Arizona.
In late January, Morris filed for divorce from her singer-songwriter husband, Ryan Hurd, after being married for five years. The two have a 3-year-old son, Hayes. However, before her announcement during pride month, fans had speculated about the nature of Morris’ sexuality amid photos of her kissing other women.
The singer has consistently voiced her opinion on LGBT issues while expressing disdain for the traditional conservatism atmosphere that is associated with the country music genre. For example, in April this year, Morris defended taking her son to a drag show.
“We were doing a benefit at Bridgestone last year when they were doing the drag ban in Tennessee,” Morris told Kelly Clarkson during a podcast interview. “There were drag queens like throughout, entertaining as well, and one actually danced with me when I was singing my song, ‘The Middle.’ And it was just amazing and fun.”
She continued describing how her son seems to be fascinated with makeup, suggesting that it is completely normal for a young boy. “My son loves watching me, like sit in the makeup chair and just is like fascinated with the colors … it was just like completely harmless,” she said.
The singer further stated, “But I think it’s just such an amazing expression of artistry, and so I just think like normalizing it and making it seem like these are just people that love dressing up too, is an amazing thing. It was an all-ages show so, it was completely family-friendly.”
Morris made headlines in 2023 for railing against legislation in Tennessee that would bar minors from attending drag shows. During a Nashville concert she invited the state of Tennessee to “f***ing arrest” her. The performer stated, “Yes, I introduced my son to some drag queens today, so Tennessee, f***ing arrest me.”
Last month, The American Tribune reported on other comments from Maren Morris, in which she claimed she left country music because of the impact former President Donald Trump had on the genre. She claimed that the “Trump years” changed the atmosphere of country music in a manner that did not suit her.
“After the Trump years, people’s biases were on full display,” Morris said during an interview with the Los Angeles Times. “It just revealed who people really were and that they were proud to be misogynistic and racist and homophobic and transphobic. All these things were being celebrated, and it was weirdly dovetailing with this hyper-masculine branch of country music. I call it butt rock.”
