“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin took the opportunity on the Friday broadcast of that show to attack the idea that there are black Republican voters, claiming that they’re as rare as unicorns. Her remarks came in response to Florida Republican Byron Donalds claiming that black voters used to be more conservative, namely when their families were together.
He said, speaking to a black conservative gathering in remarks widely attacked by the media, “You see, during Jim Crow, the Black family was together. During Jim Crow, more Black people were not just conservative — Black people have always been conservative-minded — but more Black people voted conservatively,”
Responding to Donalds’ comments and the black conservative event at which he was speaking generally, “The View” co-host Sunny Hostin claimed that finding black conservatives is like finding unicorns. She said, “These black men that he was speaking with, I’d love to see them.” She continued, “It would be like looking at unicorns.”
She continued, after her fellow co-hosts had taken their turns attacking Donalds for his remarks, that the framing of a room full of black conservatives was “interesting” because she thinks such a thing doesn’t exist in any real numbers. She said, “I thought it was interesting that the framing was a room of Black Republicans.”
She continued, after performatively holding up her hand to her face and, jokingly, scanning the audience, saying, “Where are they? Where are they? Because if you look at the stats, 77% – 81%, I’m sorry, of Black men are part of the Democratic Party.” She added, “Black voters consistently align with the Democratic Party. Over 95% of [black] women are part of the Democratic Party.”
Hostin then added that Trump is a “convicted felon” and that it is “despicable” to “pander” to him as a result, saying, “If you’re pandering yourself and your community and your history to a man like Donald Trump, who is a disgraced, one-term, twice-impeached, convicted felon — we get to say now — is even more despicable in this country.”

While Hostin says that such voters are “unicorns,” even CNN data reporter Harry Enten admitted that the growing drift of some black voters away from Biden and to Trump is a huge problem for Democrats. He said, “It‘s a huge alarm. It‘s spiraling, it‘s ambulance, it‘s police sirens, it‘s any alarm you can think of. That should be what’s going off on the Democratic side.”
Enten then added, “If that held through the election, [it] would be the best performance for a Republican presidential candidate among Black voters in 64 years, since Richard Nixon back in 1960.” He continued, “Can‘t treat Black voters as a monolith. This age breakdown shows it. It shows that younger Black voters are far less supportive of the president than older Black voters are.”
Explaining where the results are the most concerning for Democrats, he added, “Take a look at the states that shift. You would see that the states that shift are Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania … and Wisconsin.” He then admitted, “These numbers, to be honest, could be deadly to Joe Biden’s campaign.” Watch Enten discuss the matter here:
