Recently, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” underperformed expectations as the Memorial Day box office hit a 26-year low. The latest installment in the Mad Max series is among countless other major Hollywood titles that have flopped during recent releases.
Reportedly, Mad Max brought in around $31 million over the four-day holiday weekend and $59 million globally. However, when considering the exorbitant cost of producing the film, around $168 million, the box office bomb is terrible news. The film inevitably incurred additional marketing and promotion costs, which some estimates predict could have been as high as $200 million. Under this assumption, the film would need to earn $400 million to break even.
Many have speculated what is driving the abysmal financial performance among the most prominent Hollywood titles. The entertainment industry has faced challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, a writer’s strike, the advent of streaming services, and more.
However, many have pointed out that many of the latest films have just been substandard. As Breitbart’s John Nolte put it, “The answer is what’s been going wrong with Hollywood for the last five years… It’s not the pandemic. It’s not the strike. It’s not a lack of product. The problem is the product—the product sucks a**.”
Discussing the latest Mad Max film that flopped, Nolte argued that the premise of a “sexless girlboss” was bound to fail at entertaining audiences. He added, “Only a lunatic would cast a sexless girl in a Mad Max movie. Who wants to spend $30 and three hours watching an actress with the body of a 14-year-old boy running around girlbossing?”
The American Tribune recent comments from conservative commentator Megyn Kelly, who slammed Disney for its movie flops amid is insistence on inserting a woke political agenda in its entertianment offerings. Reportedly, Disney has lost around $900 million on its recent theatrical releases.
“Apparently, there’s an analysis out there showing that films like Lightyear, in which they decided to make Buzz Lightyear gay. The Little Mermaid, which is now woke…elemental, that’s one of the ones that includes a non-binary character which has one of the worst openings ever. Worst opening weekend in company history. We could go down the list,” Kelly said.
She emphasized that consumers are simply turned off from this kind of content, as demonstrated by the suboptimal financial performance of Disney’s recent films at the box office. “The people are not buying this content. They don’t want this content,” she said.
“Bit by bit. All these media companies are eliminating and big, big tech companies are eliminating their heads of diversity because it’s just a wasted position where somebody just glorifies their wokeness and tries to lecture, so it’s failing,” Kelly continued.
As Hollywood continues to seemingly ignore the results of the box office and release movies that audiences aren’t interested in, low-budget films from smaller studios such as “Sound of Freedom” are far outperforming box office expectations. The anti-human trafficking movie even beat blockbuster titles such as Indiana Jones.
