In a huge change of fortune for former President Donald Trump three years after he was suspended from Twitter after the events on January 6, 2021, Elon Musk’s X will stage a townhall with the former president, an event that many commenters argued promises to take the internet by storm and drive yet more people onto Elon’s platform to watch.
The news on the X-hosted town hall with Trump was broken by the Wall Street Journal and followed up on by the New York Post, which reported just before noon on Friday, May 31, that “Elon Musk’s social media platform X will stage a town hall with former President Donald Trump — three years after he was suspended from the site in the wake of the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.“
Continuing, the New York Post added that the town hall follows Trump’s shocking conviction in the Manhattan court on the 34 falsification of business records charges brought against him by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. As such, the news of it garnered much attention, with the NYP’s tweet on the article gathering over 30 million impressions as of the time this article was written, rare for a tweet with a link given the X algorithm.
In any case, questions for the event will be submitted during the event, which will be livestreamed on X. In addition to being livestreamed on the social media platform, the Trump town hall will also be broadcast on cable through a partnership with a cable channel called NewsNation. X will reportedly host a similar town hall event with independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
While former President Donald Trump and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. will both appear for town hall events, President Joe Biden will not have one. Such is what the Wall Street Journal reported, saying that President Biden was invited by X to do a debate with his fellow candidates or do a town hall event, but he declined the opportunity.
The news on the town hall comes as X owner and frequent Biden critical Musk reportedly met with former President Donald Trump to discuss a wide range of issues, everything from cryptocurrency regulation and policy to an invitation for the Tesla and Space X founder to speak this summer at the Republican National Convention.
Musk, posting on X about the Trump town hall, said, “This will be interesting.” He also denied speaking to Trump about crypto policy, though he added that he supports pro-liberty projects, saying, “pretty sure I’ve never discussed crypto with Trump, although I am generally in favor of things that shift power from government to the people, which crypto can do.”
Elon also gave his thoughts about the damage done to America by the recent Trump conviction on X, saying, “Indeed, great damage was done today to the public’s faith in the American legal system. If a former President can be criminally convicted over such a trivial matter – motivated by politics, rather than justice – then anyone is at risk of a similar fate.”
