During a recent segment pertaining to the Trump hush money trial, MSNBC legal analyst Anthony Coley discussed the implications of the jury containing a pair of lawyers. According to Coley, this could lead to Trump’s ultimate acquittal.
The legal analyst addressed recent revelations in the trial about the prosecution’s star witness, former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen. Per an admission from Cohen, he previously stole from the Trump Organization, drawing his reliability as a witness into question.
“Well, starting with the defense, I think their… their strategy could really be summed up in four words, ‘don’t believe Michael Cohen’. And what we saw in four days of somewhat meandering testimony cross-examination towards the end of this trial, we saw them take a couple hits at Michael Cohen’s credibility. We now know, for example, that in addition to being a convicted felon and a liar, we know that Michael Cohen, by his own admission, is a thief,” Coley said.
Presenting itself as an opportunity for the defense, Coley anticipates Trump’s legal team to play into Cohen’s questionable character. The analyst noted that the two lawyers on the jury, by their “overly analytical” nature, could be problematic for the prosecution.
Coley continued, “So I expect to see defense attorneys return to those thematics. I think what I would worry about if I’m on the prosecution case, and I say this tongue in cheek, because I ran communications at arguably the largest law firm in the world, the US Justice Department, I do worry that there are lawyers on this jury, not one, but two lawyers. And by my own experience, lawyers can sometimes be overly analytical. They can be hyper technical. And I do worry that the non lawyers on this jury may rely on the lawyers who, quite frankly, don’t have expertise in this area of the law.”
The American Tribune recently reported on other reactions from the mainstream media regarding Cohen’s admission of theft. CNN’s Jake Tapper expressed that he was still “reeling” from the discovery, noting, “Yeah, no, it’s.. it’s fascinating stuff. And I have to say I’m still kind of reeling from the revelation that Michael Cohen stole money from the Trump Organization.”
CNN anchor and chief legal analyst Laura Coates weighed in on the developments on Cohen. Similar to Tapper, she expressed her surprise that the prosecution didn’t acknowledge Cohen’s theft earlier in the case. Watch the MSNBC segment below:
“I’m shocked that we are hearing it for the first time on day three of cross examination of Michael Cohen at the prosecution did not take the sting out did not front it because it goes to the heart of the actual case. It’s not just about establishing him as a liar. They’ve done that the prosecution front did that,” she said.
She added, “Why this is so important here is because the heart of the matter is that Donald Trump was complicit cause to have this happen and knew about the money that was going and why if they can establish like we’ll call it somebody who is not to be trusted about the amount of money as well, then they might be able to suggest that Donald Trump had no idea what he was true.”
