On a Memorial Day where “Squad” reps like Ilhan Omar and Cori Bush mixed up Memorial Day and Veterans Day, former First Lady Melania Trump shared a powerful Memorial Day message and, commenting, one X user shared an incredible video of former President Donald Trump visiting the grave of a fallen Marine alongside that Marine’s son.
Melania, in her message, wrote that the fallen troops who gave their lives for America would always be remembered for their valiant sacrifice on behalf of the country, saying, “Today, we pay tribute to the brave souls who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Their selfless acts of courage will forever be remembered and honored. #MemorialDay”
Commenting, people left messages of support for her and the fallen soldiers. One, for example, said, “Thank you and your family for always showing such respect for our fallen heroes!” Another wrote, “Wishing you and President Trump a lovely Memorial day. Will never forget our Heroes sacrifice…and in a different way, I won’t forget President Trump’s and your sacrifice either.🇺🇸🙏🙏”
Another commenter left a powerful message about the movement of Old Glory in the wind, saying, “Our flag does not move because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it. God Bless you🇺🇸” And still another said, “Thank you for this Melania. You are a true patriot just like your husband. America misses having a real First Lady like you in the White House. We’ll do everything we can this November to make sure you and President Trump [return]. We owe it to the brave souls who gave it all.”
One of the most powerful comments, however, was a video shared of former President Donald Trump; visiting, when he was the president, the grave site of a fallen Marine alongside that Marine’s son, who was dressed in miniature Marine dress blues for the occassion. That commenter said, “Friendly reminder of how a real President honors our fallen heroes.”
As background, that incident occured on Memorial Day of 2017. Then, Trump visited Arlington National Cemetary and, while there, met the family of Marine Sgt. Christopher Jacobs, who died in a training accident in 2011. Christian was just 8-months-old when Sgt. Jacobs died. Now, every year, Christian and his mother Brittany, visit his grave on Memorial Day.
Watch Trump here:
Ms. Jacobs, commenting on what it was like to meet the president and to see her young son speaking to him, said, “We didn’t expect it. We were hoping we’d get to see him there that day. And it was just amazing.” Jacob, speakling more simply, just said that it was “awesome.” As of then, Jacob hoped to be a Marine like his fallen father.
Many other commenters on Melania’s beautiful post and the many supportive comments repeated the discredited story that Trump refused to visit a military cemetary in France becuase of rain and that he caused the fallen soldiers in the cemetary “suckers” and “losers.” Biden frequently repeats that discredited story as well.
