In an interview conducted in late February and released on Saturday, May 25, for her forthcoming book, “The Fall of Roe: The Rise of a New America,” former Secretary of State and failed presidential contender Hillary Clinton spoke about her 2016 defeat and, unsurprisingly, lacked introspection and blamed sexism rather than her own shortcomings for the defeat.
Particularly, she spoke about the investigation into her email server reopened at the last minute before the election by former F.B.I. director James Comey. Though he recommended no charges over the email server, he did say that she was “extremely careless,” as the NYT noted in its discussion of the interview with Mrs. Clinton.
In any case, Hillary, blaming that investigation and sexism for her loss, said, “But once he did that to me, the people, the voters who left me, were women.” She continued, alleging that worry about her judgment after the email scandal was really sexism, saying, “They left me because they just couldn’t take a risk on me, because as a woman, I’m supposed to be perfect.”
Then, continuing to bang the drum about alleged sexism, she alleged that people really were in favor of Trump because he is a man. She said, “They were willing to take a risk on Trump — who had a long list of, let’s call them flaws, to illustrate his imperfection — because he was a man, and they could envision a man as president and commander in chief.”
She also argued that Trump’s success with the right came from his adopted stance on being generally against abortion and Roe v. Wade, saying, “Politically, he threw his lot in with the right on abortion and was richly rewarded.” Many of the more vociferously pro-life people allege that Trump is not strong enough on abortion, however.
She also said, speaking about Roe v. Wade in the interview, “Too many women, particularly too many young women did not understand the effort that went into creating the underlying theory of Roe v. Wade. And the young women on my campaign made a very compelling argument that making it safe and legal was really the goal.” She added, “I kind of just pocketed the framework of Roe.”
Similarly, she attacked the Federalist Society and said Democrats had been too complacent in not really standing up to it, saying,“I just think that most of us who support the rights of women and privacy and the right to make these difficult decisions yourself, you know, we just couldn’t believe what was happening. And as a result, they slowly, surely and very effectively got what they wanted.” She added, “Our side was complacent and kind of taking it for granted and thinking it would never go away.”
Wildly, she insisted that being against abortion for religious reasons is an authoritarian tendency, saying, “Authoritarians, whether they be political or religious based, always go after women. It’s just written in the history, and that’s what will happen in this country.”
Hillary has made similar claims before. For example, she alleged at one point in April of 2024 that Trump wants to rule like a dictator, a comment that set off the Fox News panel commenting on it. Watch that panel’s reaction here:
