Speaking during her Friday, May 24 episode of “The ReidOut” on MSNBC, Joy Reid attempted to downplay Trump’s rally in the Bronx. She also took aim at Florida GOP Rep. Byron Donalds, alleging that he is just “the one black guy that Republicans love to roll out” as an example of a black guy who supports the MAGA agenda.
As background, Trump hosted a rally in the Bronx on Thursday, May 23. He and his campaign claim that 25,000 attended, while critics on the left allege that the real crowd size was much smaller. Trump likely hosted the rally in the neighborhood not because he thinks he can win an area that went 83.5% for Biden in 2020, but because he is stuck in New York due to the hush money trial.
Rep. AOC admitted as much when speaking to the press about the rally and trying to smear Trump as a grifter. She said, “Donald Trump is broke. He needs money. He’s hosting a rally to try to con people and try to fleece them out of every dollar that they have to fund his own legal fees.” She continued, “And by the way, he’s doing it in the South Bronx, not to make a point, but because he’s got court and the man practically has the legal version of an ankle bracelet around him, and he can’t leave the five boroughs because he always has to be in court. And so it is truly an embarrassment to him.”
In any case, Reid attacked Trump’s rally and Donalds in her Friday broadcast. Beginning, she cast doubt on the idea that Trump has many supporters in New York, saying, “If Trump has so many supporters in New York, why aren’t they showing up in droves to support him at his trial where the courthouse is literally just a subway ride away?”
Continuing on that point, she alleged, “Usually, there are none.” She added, “Trust me. I’ve been there. And to top off this tomfoolery, Trump floated Florida congressman Byron Donalds as a potential vice presidential pick.”
Trump, when asked about his VP shortlist after the rally, though he has mentioned Donalds otherwise, didn’t mention him. Instead, he said, “Well, we have so many. I don’t want to do that, but we have so many. You could take people like Ben Carson. You could take people like Marco Rubio, JD Vance.” He also mentioned Elise Stefanik.
In any case, Reid took the opportunity to then attack Donalds instead of Trump. She said, “Donalds, who backed Trump’s lie that Biden authorized the feds to take him out – that guy. The one Black guy that Republicans love to roll out as fake proof that Black people – the Blacks – are just MAGA. They’re MAGA. It’s a joke, and just as credible as when they pretended they were gonna make that guy speaker of the House, ’cause they weren’t gonna do that either.”
