Police in North Castle, New York, were in for a surprise when responding to what was assumed to be a routine call for emergency medical assistance for an elderly 78-year-old woman. However, officers spotted a fugitive with multiple outstanding warrants when they arrived on the scene.
When police attempted to detain the man, he resisted arrest and allegedly grabbed a knife during an ensuing brawl. Reportedly, an officer shot the suspect twice in the leg and chest to neutralize the purported threat.
The routine call led officers to a quiet, wealthy neighborhood of multi-million dollar properties that rarely sees crime. The residence law enforcement was responding to was an 8,000-square-foot mansion, where the attack that unfolded was not expected to unfold.
Subsequently, local residents have expressed shock that such an incident would occur in their neighborhood. “I’m at a loss for words right now. It’s scary,” said Ansh Arvati, a local resident who lives near the crime scene.
Another resident, Sabina Elias, noted that there were always reservations about the home but never expected what unfolded earlier this week. “It had a reputation for strange behavior, but nobody has seen anything to this degree,” said Elias. “I really hope that the police officer is not injured too badly and that he can recover quickly and this is all a faint memory for him. It’s just so unfortunate that it had to happen the way that it did, but he just came to the house trying to help.”
“You don’t really ever hear about things like that happening here. It’s surprising,” said Mayank Patel, another local said. “I’m upset, it’s upsetting. It’s upsetting as a citizen of this town,” Arvati added. Following the officer-involved shooting, the North Castle Police Department released a statement on the situation.
“North Castle Officers responded along with Armonk Ambulance and a WEMS paramedic. The woman was treated and taken by ambulance to a local hospital. While on scene, Officers became aware of a 38-year old male who was also present at the residence. The two officers were aware that this male had two outstanding arrest warrants from this jurisdiction. In an effort to detain and arrest the male subject, a physical confrontation ensued during the male subject obtained a knife and attacked one of the officers with it. The second officer fired two shots with his duty pistol, striking the male subject twice,” according to the police department.
The police department further described what led up to the shooting of the suspect, stating, “While on scene, Officers became aware of a 38-year old male who was also present at the residence. The two officers were aware that this male had two outstanding arrest warrants from this jurisdiction. In an effort to detain and arrest the male subject, a physical confrontation ensued during the male subject obtained a knife and attacked one of the officers with it. The second officer fired two shots with his duty pistol, striking the male subject twice.”
The statement concluded, “Both the male subject, and Officers wee transported to area hospital for treatment. At this time, the injuries for the suspect are believed to be non life-threatening. The Westchester DA’s office and the Westchester County Police are investigating, and the NYS Attorney General’s office has been notified.” See news coverage of the crime below:
