Over the weekend, former president Donald Trump spoke at a National Rifle Association (NRA) convention in Dallas, Texas. During his remarks, Trump offered an inspiring vision for the country, vowing to bring about a “great restoration of American freedom.”
Trump has consistently spoken to the NRA, considering them an ally. The GOP frontrunner warned the crowd that gun rights are undeniably “on the ballot” in the upcoming election, where gun control activists seek to infringe upon the Second Amendment. “Let there be no doubt, the survival of our Second Amendment is very much on the ballot. It’s under siege,” Trump stated.
The former president outlined the importance of gun ownership, particularly for safety reasons. He explained, “We need the Second Amendment for safety. Forget about going hunting and all the things you do — we need it for safety. Because you know the bad guys are not giving up their guns. The bad ones are not giving up their guns.”
However, Trump noted that American gun owners will not give up their Constitutional right to bear arms. “Americans will never surrender, ever, ever. We will never surrender. We will never give up our freedom. Americans were born free. We will live free and we will die free,” he said.
Trump began his speech by thanking the NRA for endorsing him, where they offered their formal support for the presumptive presidential nominee during the convention. He then quickly pivoted to how gun rights have come under attack. “I said they just were under siege with the guns, the rifles and everything else were under siege but they didn’t move as an inch and we have to stay in strong you know that stand very strong,” he told the audience.
The former president stated that with the help of the vote from the firearms community, he would defend “rights and liberties” in his overall effort to “make America great again.” He said, “The NRA has stood with me from the very beginning and with your vote, I will stand strong for your rights and liberties. And for more years in the White House. We’re going to do things like nobody can believe we’re going to turn our country around. We’re going to quite simply make America great again.”
However, Trump claimed that gun owners are not going to the ballot boxes in large enough numbers. “But one thing I will say and I say it is friends. We’ve got to get gun owners to vote. Because you know what? I don’t know what it is. Perhaps it’s a form of rebellion because you’re rebellious people argue but gun owners don’t vote what is that all about? I’ve heard that I heard it a few weeks ago that the gun owners voted.”
He further urged gun owners to vote, noting that if they show up and vote for him, Trump would “swamp” the left at an unprecedented level. The former president stressed to the crowd how important the upcoming election will be, claiming it will go down in history as one of the most important.
“We would swamp them at levels that nobody’s ever seen before. So I think you’re a rebellious bunch. But let’s be rebellious and vote this time okay. If you go out and vote, I understand exactly why you don’t but we have to win this election is the most important election in the history of our country. You’ve got to get all your friends, all the gun owners they have to go in they have to vote if they vote, there’s nobody that can beat us.”
