During a recent press briefing with White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre, Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy inquired why President Biden’s campaign seems to be struggling to gain traction with the American public.
Doocy cited recent polling, which paints a bleak picture of Biden’s reelection aspirations. According to some data, former President Donald Trump is leading in many critical swing states, where voters who supported Biden in 2020 may be shifting toward Trump.
Doocy asked Jean Pierre, “Why do you think Americans are so down on President Biden right now?” KJP hit back, asking for clarification. “What do you mean?” she responded. The Fox News White House correspondent substantiated his question, mentioning polling data that suggests Biden is losing in five of six swing states.
“I know you don’t like to talk about polls, like, the five of six swing states that he is losing right now to somebody who is a criminal defendant,” Doocy said. “But, more broadly, it doesn’t seem like anything you guys are doing is making him more popular. Why do you think that is?”
KJP noted that she had to tread lightly when answering Doocy’s question, stating, “So, you, uh, you mentioned a criminal defendant, your words, not mine. So I want to be super mindful about how I answer this question, because obviously, that criminal defendant is also a, in the race for 2024 elections, so going to be super mindful there.”
The press secretary proceeded to blame a number of externalities, such as the pandemic and high gas prices from “Putin’s war,” for the negative sentiment toward the Biden administration. However, KJP refused to indicate that Biden’s policies contributed to the souring public opinion.
“We understand that people are still feeling this. We get that and we’re not, we’re not blind to that,” Jean-Pierre said. She further cited several Biden initiatives designed to improve the circumstances for Americans, such as lowering healthcare costs, addressing pharmaceutical companies, and eliminating junk fees.

However, Doocy was not satisfied with KJP’s commentary. He pressed her as to why Biden’s policies have not been effective at garnering support from Americans. “I get that you understand that people are hurting right now. Why is it that nothing you’re doing to address their concerns is working?” he asked.
KJP responded, “What I’m saying is, we’re going to continue to do the work. I can’t speak to the polls, right? Those are for folks who are experts who can do a deep dive and look into that and speak to them. What I can speak to is we understand what the American people is feeling. We understand what they’re going through. That’s why we’re going to continue to do the work.”
“Have you considered in the White House that some of President Biden’s recent policy positions could be a turn off to the people that used to like him?” Doocy further inquired. KJP responded to this question, emphasizing that Biden’s agenda is apparently popular with many Americans despite what polling data would indicate.
