Former President Donald Trump recently addressed the impending threat of jail time in the New York hush money trial. Trump stated that he would be “proud to go to jail for our Constitution” as he slammed the case brought against him.
The presumptive Republican nominee has maintained that he is innocent while frequently labeling the trial as a politically motivated witch hunt designed to keep him off the campaign trail ahead of the presidential election later this year.
New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan, who is presiding over the trial, issued a gag order against Trump, which the former president has allegedly violated ten times. Reportedly, Trump could face jail time if he violates the order again.
“Everybody can say whatever they want. They can say whatever they want. I’m not allowed to say anything about anybody. It’s a disgrace, and you see the media sees it. And it’s really very sad,” he said outside the courtroom.
Trump pointed out that many who are well-versed in law have concluded the trial is a “scam.” The former president illustrated that the allegations in the case stem from years ago, calling into question why they are suddenly being addressed now.
“If you look at the legal experts and the legal scholars, everyone will say this trial is a scam. It’s something that had never happened by the way. It could have happened seven years. ago. They bring it during the election. Nobody sees that nobody talks about this should have been seven years ago. It shouldn’t have been brought. But if it was going to be brought it should have been right seven years ago,” Trump said.
He emphasized his belief that the entire case was unfounded and Judge Merchan was “corrupt.” He said, “It’s all fake, the whole case is fake. The judge is corrupt. The only thing it gives us to make them look a little bit good gives us nothing. Nobody just did now. Joe, it’s a disgrace. It’s a disgrace.”
During his post-court remarks, Trump called out a recent Biden claim regarding the state of the economy under his presidency, claiming that inflation readings were at 9% when he took office. In fact, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was at 1.4% when Biden took office and didn’t peak at over 9% until well into his presidency in June 2022.
“So I just want to mention right here, Biden made a claim that inflation under Trump was 9% and what it was it was a tiny fraction was 1.4%. And actually going down, we had essentially almost no inflation, but we had a 9% inflation and that’s a fake number because not everything was included with that. If you add it all up, I think it’s a 50% inflation tax. I call it the Biden inflation test. So he lies and he lies about everything including his golf game, because he can’t hit a ball. He can’t hit 100 yards, lies about everything but he came out and I saw that this last couple of days. He was talking about the Trump inflation was no no, his inflation was 9%,” Trump clarified.
Trump eventually zeroed back in on his possible jail time, where he indicated he would be “proud” to be imprisoned over the alleged unconstitutional actions of the judge. “And this is a disgrace. Jonathan generally just came out in this case is becoming legally obscene. It’s the articles are unbelievable. And it comes with the problem is I’m not allowed to because if anything’s mentioned against certain people, and you know, anything’s even mentioned, you were supposed in jail, for that could happen one day and I’d be very proud to go to jail for the Constitution because what he’s doing is so unconstitutional,” he stated.
