Speaking in a Wednesday, May 8, interview on CNN with host Erin Burnett, President Joe Biden dismissed out-of-hand polls showing that voters disapprove of how he has handled the economy, even despite those polls showing that American voters trust Trump more than Biden on the economy. Biden claimed that things have been turned around by his administration.
As background, those polls show that American consumers have low confidence about the economy and are worried about such very important issues as housing costs skyrocketing and real incomes after inflation going down as inflation persists and eats away at salaries that haven’t risen as quickly as inflation. Another worry shown by the polls is weak economic growth since Biden took office.
Speaking about the economy and dismissing those voter concerns, Biden said, without specifying to which poll he was referring, “We have already turned it around. Look, look at the Michigan survey, where 65 percent of the American people think they’re in good shape economically. They think the nation’s not in good shape, but they’re personally in good shape.”
Continuing, Biden then, after saying a poll showed his point, claimed polling is faulty and attacked CNN for how it polls Americans. He said, “The polling data has been wrong all along. … You guys do a poll at CNN. How many folks [do] you have to call to get one response?”
Then, after attacking CNN, Biden went on to dismiss concerns about the economy and claim that things are going great, saying, “The idea that we’re in a situation where things are so bad, the folks that — I mean, we have created more jobs. We’re in a situation where people have access to good-paying jobs.” He added, “And the last I saw, the combination of the inflation, the cost of inflation and all those things, that’s really worrisome to people, with good reason.”
Watch him here:
During the same interview, Biden suggested that aid to Israel would be changed if Rafah in Gaza is attacked, saying, “I made it clear that, if they go into Rafah — they haven’t gone into Rafah yet. If they go into Rafah, I’m not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah, to deal with the cities, to deal with that problem.”
He then added, specifying that the goal of withholding aid is not to leave Israel defenseless but rather to stop it from going on the offense, “We’re going to continue to make sure Israel is secure, in terms of Iron Dome [missile defense system] and their ability to respond to attacks like [the one that] came out of the Middle East recently,”
Trump, hammering Biden for his Israel policies, said, “What Biden is doing with respect to Israel is disgraceful. If any Jewish person voted for Joe Biden, they should be ashamed of themselves.” He continued, “He’s totally abandoned Israel and nobody can believe it. I guess he feels good about it. Because he did it as a political decision, you have to do the right decision, not the political decision. But he did a very bad thing.”
