WNBA superstar Brittney Griner, now back in the United States after being imprisoned in Russia on drug charges, recently decided to pursue motherhood instead of prioritizing her athletic career. The basketball player explained to Megan Rapinoe that such a feat would be the “highest peak” of her life.
According to Griner, raising a child would take precedence over every athletic accolade she has earned in her career. “Screw the championships and all the trophies and all that; that’s going to be the highest peak of my life right there,” she told the former U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team standout Rapinoe.
The WNBA player romanticized the idea of passing on the experiences she shared with her father, such as providing life advice or engaging in hobbies together like fishing. Griner stated that such activities would give her the “biggest joy.”
“I can’t wait to go fishing and off-roading and teach them everything my dad taught me, them coming to me for advice and watching them learn something or figure something out for the first time. That’s going to be the biggest joy,” she said.
Griner also explained how she was grateful not to have initiated this phase in life before she was jailed in Russia, where such a predicament would have undoubtedly been stressful for all parties involved. However, Griner noted that her frightening experience overseas was a wake-up call to seize the opportunity as tomorrow is not promised.
“We had talked about having kids before this happened,” Griner explained. “I’m glad we waited because it would’ve destroyed me even more — destroyed us even more — if we had a little one back here while she’s fighting to try to get me out. But when I got back, we were like, ‘Tomorrow’s not guaranteed. We need to stop playing around with time. We need to do this.”’
Having been back in the United States for 17 months, the female basketball phenom is now expecting a son with her wife, Cherelle. “We wanted a new chapter of our life. I knew I was going to be done with playing overseas, so we pulled the gun on it,’ she said. ‘We’ve got a little boy on the way, Bash Raymond Griner and I’m super excited for this next chapter of my life,” said Griner. “Anybody who knows me knows I love kids. I’ve always been right there with my nieces, my nephews. I just love family time. The country, down South side of me comes out,” she said.
Griner was arrested and jailed in 2022 after she was found in possession of a vape cartridge containing cannabis at a Moscow airport. Given that marijuana is entirely illegal in Russia, she was charged with smuggling drugs into the country. Griner was overseas playing during the WNBA offseason when she was arrested.
Over the years, Brittney Griner has developed a negative reputation among conservatives for her woke stances on cultural issues such as transgender participation in women’s sports. Furthermore, the terms of the prisoner swap which freed Griner were controversial since the U.S. released a Russian arms dealer referred to as the “merchant of death” for her exchange.
