On Thursday, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) was robbed while in San Francisco just before attending a fundraiser for a Democratic political candidate. This is one of several recent high-profile instances where the rampant crime in the state has victimized its Democratic leaders.
In what many have labeled a metaphorical taste of their own medicine, California Democrats have received intense criticism over supposed soft-on-crime policies that are fueling criminal activity. Now they are facing the consequences firsthand.
According to reports about the incident, thieves broke into Schiff’s car, which was parked in a downtown parking garage where his bags were stolen. As a result, Schiff was forced to attend a formal dinner in a hiking vest and rolled-up sleeves while other attendees were wearing suits.
During the dinner, Schiff thanked attorney Joe Cotchett, who is backing Schiff’s attempt to replace the U.S. Senate seat of the late Dianne Feinstein. “I guess it’s ‘Welcome to San Francisco,’” joked Cotchett’s press agent Lee Houskeeper.
Schiff noted that he was not in his vehicle at the time of the car break-in. “Yes, they took my bags,” the aspiring California senator said. “But I’m here to thank Joe.” Crotchett added, “Adam really showed himself tonight. He’ll be a great senator — he’s going to change the Senate tremendously.”
However, this is just one of many incidents in a trend where California politicians have been victimized by crime. For example, shocking footage was captured showing an attacker instigating a physical altercation with San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan’s security guard.
“While interviewing Mayor Matt Mahan in downtown San Jose, a man was shouting at us and fought Mayor Mahan’s security guard,” KRON4 reporter Jack Molmud wrote. “The fight lasted a couple minutes and the man was arrested by SJPD. Police said they were compiling evidence and sending it to the DA’s office.”
The American Tribune tweeted about the incident, “WATCH: Interview with San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan went awry as a thug approached the group and instigated a physical altercation with the mayor’s security guard. California politicians are now being affected by the rampant crime in the state. Maybe if this continues to happen, soft-on-crime policies will be rescinded and California will uphold the rule of law once again.”

Popular conservative X account, End Wokeness, documented a list of high-profile incidents where high-ranking political figures in California have been directly impacted by criminal activity. This tweet was shared before Schiff’s incident, which only adds to the list.
“California politicians are finally facing the ramifications of their pro-crime policies: LA Mayor Karen Bass was robbed on the weekend. It was the 2nd time in 2 years. Yesterday, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan’s security detail was attacked on a live TV interview. In October, Oakland DA Pamela Price got burglarized and didn’t receive any police assistance. California Governor Gavin Newsom and California Senator Boxer (D) were both ambushed and assauIted in Oakland,” End Wokeness wrote.
In recent years, California has garnered an undeniable reputation for rampant crime. Critics argue that policies embraced by local district attorneys all the way up to Governor Gavin Newsom have contributed to this widespread problem in the state.
