Leah McSweeney, the socialite and television star best known for her starring role on the show “Real Housewives of New York City, has said that she’s planning on leaving the Big Apple as soon as possible due to the massive uptick and crime. Explaining how the crime situation impacted her, McSweeney said that her daughter has been threatened and that the rampant criminality makes the city unsafe for women.
As background, one-ritzy and glittering New York has been hard hit by crime since 2020, with much of the progress the city had made in cleaning up the streets and making things safe for residents undone by soft-on-crime policies like no-cash bail and DAs unwilling to charge even some repeat offenders. The city’s subway system is particularly notorious for crime, with Gov. Hochul even sending National Guard troopers to the subway system in an attempt to keep it safer.
But for many residents that was too little, too late, and leaves the city’s other problems unaddressed. Such is what McSweeney said in a video on her Instagram story in which she gave a “Public service announcement” and said, as Page Six reported, “People are smoking crack for breakfast in Times Square.” She added that her teenage daughter was recently threatened on the subway.
Continuing, Page Six reports, she explained that the threatening individual threatened serious bodily harm against the 16-year-old girl, saying he would “turn her into a pile of meat on the floor.” Concluding with a vow to leave the chaotic, crime-filled city as soon as she is able to do so, McSweeney said, “And I’ll be leaving New York as soon as possible.”
McSweeney then appeared on Fox and Friends to discuss the issue in more depth. She said, speaking to show co-host Ainsley Earhardt, “This breaks my heart because New York City is the best city in the world.” Then, digging into why she feels she must leave, she said, “But it is not safe right now, and it is especially not safe for women.”
Continuing, she explained the subway incident in which her daughter was threatened, saying, “A man came in and sat across from them and said, ‘Shut the blank up, or I’m going to kill you and turn you into a pile of meat on the floor.'” She added, “She was scared to tell me because she knows I’m going to be nervous… she doesn’t want to make me nervous, but she was scared.”
She then torched the city’s politicians for claiming that the city is safe when she has experienced otherwise, saying, “The worst thing is we’re being gaslit by the politicians who tell us that it’s actually safer than ever, and it’s not. I’m sorry, there’s no way.” She continued, “I’m out there. I’m on the train. I’m walking around. It’s not safe.”
She added, explaining how the quality of life issue ruined the city for her, “I never thought I would say that. I was like, ‘No, New York ’til I die,’ but I am just sick of the quality of life here. I’m hoping that things turn around, because like I said, this is the best city in the world, but the people who are in charge do not care. Mayor Adams is at Zero Bond, he’s at Casa Cipriani. Help us.”
