Recently, liberal attorney Julian Epstein appeared on Fox News Channel’s “The Brian Kilmeade Show” discussing the controversy surrounding Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and the election interference case against former President Donald Trump.
Discussing the push to remove Fani Willis from the case, Epstein maintained that Fani Willis should either “resign or recuse” herself if she indeed had an interest in the legal battle. The lawyer also claimed it was “right” to allow Trump’s legal team to appeal the case.
For context, speculation has arisen regarding Willis’ involvement in the case after an affair between her and special prosecutor Nathan Wade was uncovered. Trump co-defendant Michael Roman brought the romantic relationship to light, claiming Willis could have attained improper financial benefit from the arrangement.
Epstein didn’t hold back in asserting his belief that the situation was a “kickback” scheme, a concern harbored by many conservatives. Aside from whether it is permissible for Willis to continue pursuing the case, Epstein noted that there is also the issue of potential perjury.
“Well, I think if Fani Willis had any real interest in this case, she would resign or recuse herself from it. This is an utter embarrassment. I mean, this looks to me, in my opinion, this was a kickback scheme, where she hired a boyfriend who was then providing her all kinds of benefits. I think the whole claim about, the reimbursements, is hard to believe. I think the claims about when the relationship began. I think those are very hard to believe. I think the judge was right to allow the Trump team to appeal. And, I think there’s not just that question about whether she should be kicked off the case. So I think there’s a question potentially about perjury, moving forward that the state could take up the legislature is going to look into. So I think there is, I mean, just the, you know, the standard in Georgia is the major conflict or the apparent civil conflict,” Epstein said.
The attorney further emphasized that he believes it is difficult to claim there is not an “unbelievable conflict” in the case, suggesting it is a flawed attempt to prosecute the former President as the 2024 election draws increasingly nearer.
“And given that there is a strong appearance that Barney Lewis had any economic incentive for the case to move forward, I don’t know how you argue this is not an unbelievable conflict. In any case, this is an utter embarrassment, for the, you know, amongst many other embarrassments for, the … crowd that is, you know, prosecuting Trump in the 11th hour of this campaign,” he continued.
A state judge presiding over the Fulton County election interference case against the GOP frontrunner and his co-defendants determined last week that their respective legal teams can appeal the order that denied Fani Willis disqualification.
Last week, Fulton County Superior Judge Scott McAfee issued a certificate of immediate review, permitting Trump and the other eight co-defendants to seek an appeal. The defense has ten days to file an application to the Georgia Court of Appeals.
