Tyson Foods recently announced it would shut down an Iowa pork factory that would axe roughly 1,000 jobs. The food giant sparked controversy after announcing it would be hiring recently arrived migrants in New York to work at a Tennessee plant amid the Iowa closure.
Reports indicate that Tyson hired at least 87 migrants from Central and South America in two separate groups. Furthermore, the food company already employs about 42,000 immigrants. Garret Dolan, a human resources leader in the company, expressed that Tyson seeks to hire even more migrants. “We would like to employ another 42,000 if we could find them,” he said.
Responding to Tyson’s hiring practices, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance slammed U.S.-based companies that fire American employees only to hire foreigners. The senator suggested that companies that do this should be subjected to congressional scrutiny. “We’re certainly going to look into whether we can change that [ability], assuming Tyson is operating legally,” Vance told Jesse Watters during a recent Fox News appearance.
“All we know is that they are firing American workers and hiring illegal aliens to replace them. This is the entire point of illegal immigration — and Republicans, we’ve got to hammer this point home,” the Ohio senator added, voicing a commonly held conservative sentiment that big business is incentivized to support illegal immigration for cheap labor.
A spokesperson on behalf of Tyson Foods responded to a Fox News request for comment, stating that the company is “proud” to employ a “diverse workforce,” including anyone authorized to work in the United States. “Tyson Foods is proud to employ a diverse workforce, including immigrants, all of whom are legally authorized to work in the United States,” the spokesperson said.
Vance continued denouncing this shift in labor market dynamics, emphasizing that illegal immigration is effectively destroying the middle class by forcing many Americans out of the job market and diluting wages. “That is not capitalism or a market economy. That is the decimation of the American middle class via illegal immigration, and it’s happening all over the country,” he said. Vance also called out the Biden administration for attempting to “pretend that economic migrants are asylum seekers.”
The senator claimed that, for the sake of saving what’s left of the American dream, the U.S. must vote Trump back into the White House along with GOP congressional leaders who are willing to fight for conservative causes. “This is the end of the American dream if we let this stuff happen. We’ve got to re-elect Donald Trump, and we’ve got to get congressional Republicans with some spine to push back against this stuff.” Watch the J.D. Vance interview below:
The American Tribune recently reported on backlash against Tyson Foods for its hiring of illegal immigrants. “We’re recognizing there’s not a lot of people that are going to be working labor-manufacturing jobs that are American,” Dolan added while noting that many of the company’s new hires “are going to come from refugees and immigrants, so we’re now in the business of strategically thinking that through.” Subsequently, conservatives on social media have called for a boycott against Tyson and its various brands.
