Aurora, Colorado, a town near Denver, has put the larger city on notice over the massive influx of illegal immigrants into Dever, a sanctuary city. Particularly, Auroro warned the Mile High City not to try transporting illegal immigrants to it, as it has neither the resources nor the desire to help house and support them, as it is not a sanctuary city nor a large one with extra resources to spend on such an endeavor.
Aurora first noted as much in a resolution passed by the City Council in late February of 2024. In that resolution, it provided, “The City Council affirms remaining a Non-Sanctuary City and asserts the City does not currently have the financial capacity to fund new services related to this crisis and demands that other municipalities and entities do not systematically transport migrants or people experiencing homelessness to the City for temporary housing without the City first being given an opportunity to coordinate such assistance with those other municipalities. We call on the federal government to perform its constitutional duty and secure our nation’s borders. We want to express our appreciation with the State and local governments and other organizations who are dealing with this crisis.”
Explaining the resolution in the preamble, it noted, “some jurisdictions, including Aurora, have received a large-scale influx of new migrants, many of which have been transported to the City of Aurora by other municipalities without notice and an opportunity to address the financial impact.”
It added, “the Aurora City Council has found that organizations who are transporting migrants or individuals experiencing homelessness into Aurora for temporary housing have not communicated with the City about their plans to transport migrants or individuals experiencing homelessness to Aurora, which results in financial hardship on the City and burdens available City resources.”
But it didn’t end there. On Monday, March 4, Aurora City Council member Danielle Jurinsky appeared on FNC’s “America’s Newsroom” to speak about the resolution and general situation surrounding Denver, Aurora, and the illegal immigration situation. “It’s been pretty tense here, we’re feeling it,” Jurinsky said during the appearance. Jurinsky added, “We will not be aiding into this migrant crisis.”
Continuing, Jursinky added that though it was a “resolution, not an ordinance, so it’s not a law,” the point of it was to “make a very strong statement that Aurora is not a sanctuary city.” She then noted that the latest resolution was a doubling down on the policy, saying, “That resolution was actually passed in 2017, so the resolution I brought forward just doubled down on that.”
Jurinsky then explained what message the town was sending to Denver, saying, “But we are making the statement that if they are caught doing it, which they were caught red-handed the first time, if they are caught doing it, they had either better send the funding and have a plan for these individuals, or a council person like myself will be extremely vocal and all over the media letting everybody know what Denver is doing.”
She then emphasized that the illegal immigration situation is a crisis, saying, “This is absolutely a crisis. And to think that this isn’t a complete failure at the federal level, and to think that this is going to be put on your local city council to solve the migrant crisis, makes no sense.” She added, “Enough is enough, Joe Biden, step up.”
