As could be expected, the progressive left melted down over the Supreme Court of the United States ruling on the Colorado decision to remove Trump from the ballot. Colorado’s Supreme Court, as background, allowed Trump to be removed from the ballot under the “Insurrection Clause” of the 14th Amendment in a 4-3 opinion, and SCOTUS then overturned it in a 9-0 decision.
The Supreme Court, in its ruling, found that Congress was meant to have the power to enforce the Insurrection Clause, not the states, as letting the states do so would lead to chaos. Trump was heartened by the decision, posting, “BIG WIN FOR AMERICA!!!” The left was, predictably, far less enthusiastic about the ruling.
For example, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold posted on X about the ruling, saying, “I am disappointed in the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision stripping states of the authority to enforce Section 3 of the 14th Amendment for federal candidates. Colorado should be able to bar oath-breaking insurrections from our ballot.”
Firing back at her, Lauren Boebert said, “The Supreme Court unanimously threw out this idiotic and unconstitutional argument. The fact that you’re still acting like a petulant child because you don’t like Trump is just pathetic. You have no business in the Secretary of State’s office and shouldn’t oversee an election in which you have shown a clear bias. You’re unfit. Time for you to be RECALLED!”
But Griswold wasn’t done with the tweet for which she got flamed. She also appeared on MSNBC and said, “I do believe that states should be able, under our Constitution, to bar oath-breaking insurrectionists. And ultimately this decision leaves open, or it leaves open the door for Congress to act, to pass authorizing legislation. But we know that Congress is a nearly non-functioning body. So ultimately it will up to the American voters to save our democracy in November.”
Joining in the social media meltdown after the ruling was far-left, Gen Z influencer Henry Sisson. He wrote, “Insurrection sympathizer Clarence Thomas ruled that insurrectionist Donald Trump can remain on the ballot in 2024. That should be the headline.”
MSNBC’s Keith Olberman went even more berserk in his tweet on the matter, saying that SCOTUS should be dissolved. He wrote, “The Supreme Court has betrayed democracy. Its members including Jackson, Kagan and Sotomayor have proved themselves inept at reading comprehension. And collectively the “court” has shown itself to be corrupt and illegitimate. It must be dissolved.”
CNN’s Dana Bash gave a somewhat less apoplectic but just as foolish take, saying, “Unfortunately for America, the Court isn’t necessarily wrong that this is the way the Framers wanted it to be. They wanted Congress, the people who are closest to their constituents, to be able to make the rules and the laws.”
Watch her here:
Norm Eisen, a Brookings senior fellow and CNN contributor, posted, “If I were on SCOTUS, I would have ruled earlier on the 14A case The short window between the decision & Super Tuesday risks the Court appearing political by putting the wind in Trump’s sails right before primary voters go to the polls.” He also appeared on CNN to sound off. Watch that here:
