A 36-year-old man in Houston was shot and killed on the morning of Sunday, February 25, when he saw, through home security cameras, that three men were trying to steal his pickup truck and enter his home. The three masked men, when he tried to fight them off, killed him. They had entered the house after they failed to steal the truck.
The incident began, according to Houston Police Department Detective David Higgs, when the individual saw that the three masked men were trying to break into his truck. Watching them through home surveillance cameras positioned outside the home and near the truck, he then saw them head toward the home. Doing so, they broke into the house and turned off its lights.
Then, once inside and in the dark, the marked home invaders opened fire on the man and shot him multiple times. He died from those gunshot wounds. His wife and children were inside the house with him when he was murdered, though they were unharmed by the home invaders and, according to Detective Higgs, did not see him get shot.
Detective Higgs, commenting on the situation and how it has impacted the man’s family, said, “It’s very traumatic for the wife and kids. It’s a situation no one ever wants to be in. It’s very senseless at this point. We think it’s an isolated event. There’s no reason for anybody else in the area to be concerned.”
ABC 13, reporting on the horrific incident, added a few more details about the deadly home invasion. According to it, the incident occurred at about 2:30 in the morning, and the masked men entered through a side door of the home. It also reported that the man was shot when, after telling his wife to go hide in the bedroom for cover, he stood up and was shot in the home’s hallway.
Further, Detective Higgs added that it appears the man was not able to defend himself from the home invaders, as there is no evidence of a fight or other altercation at the scene, other than his being senselessly shot by the criminal. Higgs then added that there is no evidence that items were stolen from the home, raising the question of what the criminals were doing there.
The police added that the three men, all of whom were described only as wearing all-black clothing and black ski masks, are at large and the investigation is ongoing. The law enforcement authorities asked neighbors of the murdered man to look for any “suspicious vehicles rolling into the neighborhood” or any “suspicious persons walking around” on their security cameras, though no description of the vehicle used by the murderers was provided.
Some security camera footage of the incident has emerged, showing the second suspect entering the house. Watch that here:
The police also encouraged residents of the area to install security cameras around their homes to keep an eye on things, and to remember to call 911 immediately if anything suspicious is going on, rather than trying to investigate the situation themselves and potentially putting their lives at risk.
