Ronna McDaniel, the niece of Sen. Mitt Romney and now-former Chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, has announced that she will step down from the RNC following Trump’s South Carolina victory and his endorsement of a new leadership lineup for the RNC. McDaniel was regarded by many as a good fundraiser, but not much else.
In a statement on her resignation, McDaniel described what she thought her best moments at the RNC were and when she will step down, setting the date at March 8. She attempted to connect her resignation to GOP tradition, but the resignation seemed much more an impact of MAGA’s grip on the party rather than any GOP tradition.
She began the statement by saying, “Some of my proudest accomplishments include firing Nancy Pelosi, winning the popular vote in 2022, creating an Election Integrity Department, building the committee’s first small dollar grassroots donor program, strengthening our state parties through our Growing Republican Organizations to Win program, expanding the Party through minority outreach at our community centers, and launching Bank Your Vote to get Republicans to commit to voting early.”
Continuing, she said, “I have decided to step aside at our Spring Training on March 8 in Houston to allow our nominee to select a Chair of their choosing. The RNC has historically undergone change once we have a nominee and it has always been my intention to honor that tradition.”
Laura Loomer thought that step-down date was less than ideal, writing, in a post on X, “The fact that Ronna Romney is waiting to resign AFTER March 5, Super Tuesday, is further evidence that she is a disgusting narcissist who just wants to sabotage as many Republican elections as possible. Ronna Romney is revolting. She needs to be kept far away from Donald Trump.”
Ronna’s resignation has been rumored since early February Then, the Associated Press, in its report, cited two anonymous sources who claimed that McDaniel met with Trump to discuss stepping down, and both agreed to wait and see how the South Carolina primary goes before making a final decision or announcement on the matter.
Trump, posting on Truth Social about her at around the same time, said, “Things are looking great in the Presidential Race of 2024 against Crooked Joe Biden. We have Leads, in many cases substantial, in virtually every Head-to-Head Poll. The Primary seems to be over, but I’ll be going to South Carolina next week to finish off a very unpopular Candidate. On Thursday, I’m heading to Nevada for the Nevada Caucus, where there are 26 Delegates – Hopefully, we’ll get most of them. In my successful run in 2016, the State of Michigan really came through – First time in Decades that it was won by a Republican, and it was headed up by my friend Ronna McDaniel. Ronna is now Head of the RNC, and I’ll be making a decision the day after the South Carolina Primary as to my recommendations for RNC Growth.”
Then, speaking to Fox News about Ronna, Trump said, “I think she did great when she ran Michigan for me. I think she did OK initially in the RNC.” Continuing in the interview, he said, “I would say right now there’ll probably be some changes made.”
It is currently unclear who will replace McDaniel. Lara Trump has said she wants the job, and Mike Lindell told Steve Bannon that he would take the job if Trump offered it to him. “100% I would then I would have all the tools I need to fix secure these elections and immediately we’ve already got everything in place. We just need resources and, and their blessing behind us. Absolutely,” he said.
