The town council of the small Colorado town of Monument, which sits between Colorado Springs and Denver, just decided unanimously to reject becoming a sanctuary city and affirm its designation as a non-sanctuary city. The move came after Denver, a sanctuary city, suffered under such an influx of illegal immigrants that its mayor admitted it is hitting the “breaking point.”
The mayor of Monument then appeared on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends First” to discuss the town’s decision, how the disastrous Denver situation impacted his town’s stance toward illegal immigration and being a “sanctuary city,” and what particular issues with an illegal immigrant influx kept his town from becoming a sanctuary city.
That Mayor, Mr. Mitch LaKind, first said that the decision to unanimously reaffirm the non-sanctuary city designation came because the members of the town wanted to ensure that the city of Denver doesn’t think it can get away with exporting its surplus of illegal immigrants to Monument. He said, “The goal is to make sure that Denver knows that we will not be accepting any busloads of migrants into our community.”
Continuing, he explained how Monument has a far smaller budget than Denver, meaning it can’t be responsible for bearing the burden of Denver’s bad decisions. He said, “The main reason is that we don’t have a budget that matches theirs, and we won’t utilize taxpayer funds for the support of what they’ve decided to take on themselves as a self-declared sanctuary city.”
Mayor LaKind also described to FNC how his town would take prompt action to rectify the situation via federal and local law enforcement resources if Denver tried bussing in illegal immigrants, saying, “the town administration and police force will work with federal agencies to have them picked up and brought to wherever they would need to be held.”
Concluding, Mayor LaKind said that Biden is well within his existing powers as president to lock down the border and stop the illegal immigration crisis, he just has chosen not to use those powers to rectify the situation. Speaking on that, he said, “The president has the power to do that. He’s had the power all along. He’s chosen not to.”

Mayor Johnston of Denver, for his part, recently warned that his city is close to reaching a “breaking point” due to illegal immigration. During that admission, which came during an appearance on Fox News, Johnston first noted the scope of Denver’s illegal immigrant influx. He said, “I think we have successfully welcomed almost 40,000 migrants in the last year, and we know what it takes to do this successfully.”
Mayor Johnston added, “We just need that help, and the things we need are federal dollars, but the most important thing is we need work authorization for folks when they arrive. We need those resources at the border, so you can add more security at the border, so you can help process those asylum claims and so the folks that do arrive here can work.”
And, speaking about the “breaking point” in the context of the tens of thousands of migrants and what he thinks the city needs in handouts from DC to help it deal with the mass migration crisis, the mayor said, “I think our city is very close to its breaking point now, and we’ve been talking to leaders in D.C. around the country about why we need to take action here.”
