Florida Sen. Marco Rubio recently described a phenomenon he has observed in the Sunshine State where refugees receive substantial government benefits. Rubio illustrated how this could be seen as unfair to hard-working taxpayers.
The senator described a scenario where a Florida resident has worked in the state for decades, only to receive $1,000 or less per month in Social Security benefits they’ve paid into their entire career. According to Rubio, there are young refugees capable of working who are receiving well over $1,000 per month in government benefits.
“One of the things I see a lot in South Florida are people that have been in this country they may have came from Cuba 45 years ago. They’ve worked here their entire lives. They retire. They get $800 $900 $1,000 A month from Social Security. And then they run into somebody who just got here from Cuba three months ago. He’s 29 years old, doesn’t work. And he’s given $1,500 a month and benefits by our government because they’re refugees,” Rubio said.
Rubio continues describing how said refugees are traveling back to an environment that they are supposedly fleeing from while taxpayers continue to load them up on benefits. “That refugee. A year later, is traveling back to Cuba 15 times. So you’re a refugee fleeing oppression from a place that you now go back and visit 15 times the following year. And in the meantime, we’re giving you Medicaid, food stamps, Health care for your children, cash payments from the refugee fund,” the senator stated.
The Florida senator continues to highlight this frustrating scenario where American citizens are receiving less in benefits their tax dollars have contributed to for years than young refugees who have just arrived in the country.
“So imagine if you’ve been working here for 40 years, and your Social Security check is smaller than the benefits going to a 28 year old, able bodied person who just got here that’s real that happens that’s happening every day. That makes no sense,” he said.
Rubio’s comments represent a palpable frustration among Republican politicians and conservative voters over federal resources subsidizing the interests of migrants instead of American citizens. The American Tribune recently reported on comments from Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who slammed the Biden administration for diverting resources away from The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) to illegal immigrants.
“The border is causing hundreds of problems. I mean, this should just went up all across the country and we’ve seen it in crime that the things are going on the squatters in homes. Policemen getting beat up. But I’m on the VA committee also. And so we try to protect our veterans,” Tuberville said.
“But by the actions of Joe Biden, he’s decided, Okay, we got to feed all these 10 million and people will have come across the border. We’ve got to house them, and we got to give them health care. Well, what better way Joe Biden says to let’s just go and use our Community Health Care Centers that the VA ‘s are using that veterans are using, so that’s what they’ve done. They’ve opened up care from the doctors in these community care systems that aligns now in the BAs are getting longer. Our funds that are supposed to go to the veterans are going to these illegal immigrants coming across. It’s a disaster. It’s just one of the many, many things that’s causing this country to really go to his knees because all these illegals coming into our country,” he said.
