New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez recently gave a grave warning for the country when considering a possible reelection of former President Donald Trump. The progressive representative played on the pervasive Democratic talking point that Trump is allegedly a threat to the very fabric of Democracy in the U.S.
The conversation regarding Trump began when AOC was asked if she was concerned about potential Democratic challengers stealing critical votes from President Biden, particularly in vulnerable swing states. The representative noted that this was a real threat to Biden’s campaign but quickly pivoted the discussion to the supposed implications of Trump regaining the White House.
“We need to understand what we are staring down in this country. If Donald Trump is elected president United States, we do not know if there will be a verifiable next election that has integrity. He already tried to. We saw on January 6, he tried to overturn the results of a presidential election by force by inciting a riot. And I you know, I think we need to be very, very realistic about the grave grave impacts of a Donald Trump election. It is not a joke. It is not a game we need to protect our democracy. And ideally, it’s going to the progressive values,” she said.
Earlier in the interview, the topic of Joe Biden’s elderly age came into discussion along with speculation that someone else could be the Democratic nominee. AOC addressed the concerns over the president’s age by pointing out that Trump and Biden are only a few years apart.
However, Ocasio-Cortez did not address any of the instances that many have claimed are evidence of Biden’s memory and cognitive function rapidly deteriorating. For example, Special Counsel Robert Hur, tasked with investigating Biden’s mishandling of classified information, partly concluded that criminal charges should not be brought against the president because of his challenged memory and elderly age.
Omitting this from the discussion, AOC turned to Trump’s ongoing legal battles, citing them as a reason to choose Biden. The representative addressed Biden as “one of the most successful presidents in history” while listing off several purported accomplishments.
“I mean, I think right now, when it comes to the President’s age, folks are talking about how he’s 81 But we have to look at first of all, Donald Trump is around the same age of 77 years old, they could have gone to high school together. And beyond that Donald Trump has 91 indictments. And what I know who I’m going to choose is going to be the one of the most successful presidents in modern American history. That plan that passed the Inflation Reduction Act that got us the American rescue plan that ensured that we could pass one of the largest federal investments in climate change in US history. And as far as we go, as we know, virtually all the filing deadlines have passed. There’s already been a primary voters have outright rejected Dean Phillips, President Biden is going to be the Democratic nominee and hopefully he’ll be reelected as president United States,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
