David Shafer, one of the co-defendants of former President Donald Trump in the RICO case brought against Trump and 18 others, just joined the effort to demolish DA Willis’ case by calling out her relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade and potential impropriety surrounding that relationship. He did so in a recent filing in which he alleges that Wade made “false and misleading statements” about his relationship with DA Willis.
As background, Mr. Shafer is a former Georgia state senator and was, until recently, the chairman of the Georgia Republican Party. He was charged by DA Willis under the state’s RICO statute, along with President Trump and 17 other individuals, over their efforts to contest the 2020 election, which DA Willis alleges was a criminal conspiracy.
DA Willis has been under fire since early January thanks to a filing from fellow co-defendant Michael Roman, who alleged that she had an improper relationship with Special Prosecutor Nathan Wade. Roman’s accusations sparked others, and investigations into DA Willis and her alleged misuse of government funds are now ongoing.
In any case, in the recent filing, Shafer’s legal team said, “Defendant David J. Shafer files this Supplement to Motion to Disqualify the District Attorney for Fulton County, Georgia, and hereby supplements his Motion to Disqualify The District Attorney for Fulton County, Georgia, Atlanta Judicial Circuit, and The District Attorney’s Office from Further Prosecution of This Action (Motion to Disqualify), respectfully showing that, upon information and belief, Special Assistant District Attorney Nathan J. Wade has made knowingly false and misleading statements concerning his relationship with Fulton County District Attorney Fani T. Willis. Mr. Shafer submits the statements as additional evidence of misconduct by the prosecution in this action, as additional grounds for disqualification of District Attorney Willis and her office.”
Then, the filing provides examples of what it claims were Mr. Wade lying about his relationship with DA Willis, namely his saying “No” when asked if he cheated on his wife. Those questions came as part of an ongoing divorce dispute that, given its content, has been seen by many as relevant to the accusations against DA Willis.
Concluding, the filing provides, “Based upon the facts and authorities set forth herein and in Defendant David J. Shafer’s Motion to Disqualify The District Attorney for Fulton County, Georgia, Atlanta Judicial Circuit, and The District Attorney’s Office from Further Prosecution of This Action, defendant David J. Shafer respectfully requests that the Court grant defendant’s Motion to Disqualify The District Attorney for Fulton County, Georgia, Atlanta Judicial Circuit, and The District Attorney’s Office from Further Prosecution of This Action and order that Fulton County, Georgia, Atlanta Judicial Circuit, District Attorney Fani T. Willis and her office are disqualified from representing the State of Georgia in this action.“
Tweeting about the filing, Mr. Shager said, “We have supplemented our motion to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis with exhibits showing how sworn statements by Special Prosecutor Nathan Wade in the disqualification matter conflict with sworn statements he gave in his divorce.”
DA Willis, for her part, has alleged that the accusations against her are based in racism, not fact. Watch her make that claim here:
