The 2024 Presidential race is heating up, and even though the GOP candidate hasn’t been officially announced, anything other than Donald Trump would indicate something very bad happened. While the Democrats are expected to offer up incumbent president Joe Biden, his age and declining faculties have caused many on both sides to speculate about his future.
Many names have been bandied about when folks whisper about Biden’s future. Kamala Harris would be the presumptive choice, considering she is the Vice President, but she is one of the least liked, lowest-rated politicians in White House history. Obviously, she checks two important leftist boxes: she is black and a woman, but it is likely she would lose overwhelmingly if she were the nominee.
Beyond Harris lies Mayor Pete, the most feckless, ineffective Transportation Secretary in American history, and California Governor Gavin Newsom. Newsom lords over the crumbling state of California, which is bleeding industry and residents at a historic rate. Democrat strategists agree that Newsom is best served by waiting until 2028, and that leaves one dark-horse candidate to take on former President Trump.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama has been floated as a possible last-minute candidate if Joe Biden dropped out or something worse. While on the surface, that would seem to be a very bad thing for the GOP, one key Democrat figure thinks it isn’t going to happen. David Axelrod, a former senior adviser to Barack Obama threw cold water on the idea, perhaps dousing the Democrats only chance.
Axelrod addressed the rumors on cable news. He said: “Here’s what I know. Michelle Obama loves this country, she is a brilliant person and a brilliant communicator. But she was a conscript to politics, she was never interested in a political life, even when Barack Obama was a young politician. She really didn’t participate much in his campaigns. I was with him in his Senate campaign in 2004, I think she showed up twice in the whole campaign on election nights.”
The Obamas spent a decade in Government, and many think Michelle doesn’t want to dedicate her free time to politics, especially in this social setting. Axelrod continued: “So she is not someone who likes politics, she doesn’t like the tone and tenor of politics and I would be floored if she would consent to that. They feel they gave 10 years of their life to this and I’m sure she feels as Barbara Bush did when she said there has to be someone other than the Bush’s and the Clinton’s who can be president of the United States.”
It is still unknown as to what the Democrats will do if Biden falters, but Axelrod offered his best guess: “My guess is that is her attitude. I always say I have more chance of dancing in the Bolshoi Ballet as next year than she would be president of the United States.” Axelrod’s ballet skills are unknown, so he definitely thinks Michelle Obama won’t run.
It is yet unknown as to exactly what the Democrats will do if Joe Biden accepts Father Time and opts out of the election. At this point, Biden is still the incumbent, but if the 81-year-old continues his rapid decline, the left could be scrambling come convention time.
