Apparently, the podcast is the new, preferred format for racial allegations, airing of grievances, and outrageous claims. No, we aren’t referring to political discourse but rather celebrities who suddenly feel emboldened to reveal too much information on a podcast. Comedian Katt Williams blew the internet up recently with a scathing appearance on a podcast called “Club Shay Shay.”
The podcast is the creation of NFL Hall of Fame tight end and Fox Sports personality Shannon Sharpe. It is a conversation-style broadcast of question and answer between Sharpe and the guest. Since Katt Williams blew the show up weeks ago, it has gained in popularity for both listeners and celebrities with an axe to grind.
The latest to make waves is Mo’Nique. She is an actress and comedian, and she is best known for winning an Academy Award for the movie “Precious” in 2009. She also hosted her own talk show for three seasons and received an Emmy nomination in 2015. The comedian also received a Grammy nomination in 2002 for Best Comedy Album. However, apparently, the comedian feels as though her race has held her back.
Mo’Nique complained to Shannon Sharpe: “If I was a white woman, do you know what my name would be? Melissa McCarthy. If I was a white woman, my name would be Melissa McCarthy. Same track record! Five-year sitcom in syndication. The opportunities are not the same.” Mo’Nique is referring to “Mike and Molly” star Melissa McCarthy.
The “Bridesmaids” star played in “Mike and Molly” for six seasons and has received two Academy Award nominations. She has also starred in numerous movies, which apparently doesn’t sit well with Mo”Nique. Considering the awards and recognition, it is a reach to suggest the comedian has not had opportunities because she is black, but that is exactly what she is saying to Sharpe.
The bombastic comedian also took shots at beloved funnyman Kevin Hart. Mo’Nique and Hart had a falling out that resulted in Hart reaching out to the comedian. She said Hart told her, “Let’s move past it, Mo. Let’s do great things together. Don’t even worry about it. Whatever you want to do I will partner with you. I will executive produce with you … I’ll do whatever you want me to do.” She now says: “That was two years ago. I never talked back to Kevin Hart again.”
The bombastic funny-woman also took umbrage with comedian and radio host D.L. Hughley. Mo’Nique claimed that she had an uncomfortable experience during a segment and didn’t want it aired. She also claimed when brought to his attention, Hughley ignored her concerns. This caused Hughley to say, “Mo’Nique’s a liar. When Mo’Nique did call me, I heard her complaints, listened to her, and pulled the segment. So, if I had been as dismissive as she alleges I was, that segment would’ve aired. It didn’t because I respected her wishes. She’s a liar.”
Apparently, drama sells. At least for Katt Williams and Mon’Nique, it has. Williams is set to headline a massive tour and recently added Mo’Nique as support. Despite her complaints, she has landed a lucrative gig opening stadiums everywhere. Even Melissa McCarthy can’t say that.
