It is a strange time to be making movies in Hollywood. The woke movement has somewhat changed the rules in Hollywood, and as a result, studios have had to change some of their traditional practices. Diversity and equity have forced the reimagination of some characters and introduced more “diverse” characters than real life ever imagined, and that has nearly destroyed Hollywood.
Some staples of cinema have been dying a slow death. The car chase, the action hero, and the patriotic American, among others, have seen diminished roles in recent years. Even dark comedy has suffered at the hands of the left. Many subjects that were once deemed fair game have become off-limits in this new, woke society.
Recently, a popular British actor expressed some unexpected views about what he thinks is “overused” in Hollywood. Henry Cavill, who starred as Superman in numerous films, including Justice League, talked about his opinion on sex scenes during a recent podcast. Cavill said: “I don’t understand them – I’m not a fan. There are circumstances where a sex scene actually is beneficial to a movie, rather than just the audience, but I think sometimes they’re overused these days.”
It is a bit ironic, considering Cavill had a steamy bathtub scene with Lois Lane, aka Amy Adams, in “Man of Steel.” Still, the “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” star expressed his skepticism about the necessity of more sex. He continued: “It’s when you have a sense where you’re going, ‘Is this really necessary or is it just people with less clothing on?’ And that’s when you start to get more uncomfortable and you’re thinking, ‘There’s not a performance here. There’s not a piece which is going to carry through to the rest of the movie’.”
Many movies have been featuring same-sex scenes in recent years, including sex scenes. Those have generally not been well received by audiences, with many films, including the rom-com “Bros,” flopping tremendously. Though there may be no correlation, the decline in box office numbers and the amount of gratuitous sex is coincidental, at least.
The British star admitted that “sex scenes can be great in a movie” and “can really help with the storytelling,” but he still feels like they are being leaned on too heavily by Hollywood. A recent study showed that Generation Z wants to see less sex on the screen. As that generation replaces the aging Gen X’ers as the dominant forces in the culture, tastes have to change with them. That may include graphic content on the big screen.
Cavill continued: “Most of the time the human imagination is going to trump it. So, it can be a little bit of a cop-out if a TV show or a movie is just filled with gyrating bodies and you’re going, ‘Okay, but what is this doing for us apart from the idea of, Oh naked person, great.’ [I’m] not a fan of doing them.” The shift in culture reportedly puts more emphasis on “friendships and platonic relationships” as opposed to sex, and as Cavill alludes to, Hollywood would be best served to shift with the demographic.
Much like car chases and buddy cop comedies, the sex scene may be a thing of the past in Hollywood. It is indeed hard to believe, considering the industry’s obsession with sex and beauty, but perhaps the way Hollywood has been headed in recent years, it might be best if we see less sex on the screen.
