Texas Gov. Greg Abbott recently denounced the Biden administration for its role in the border crisis the Lone Star state faces along its southern border. Speaking with Fox News Channel’s Maria Bartiromo, the Republican governor outlined how the United States requires urgent, substantive action to mitigate the ongoing border crisis.
Gov. Abbott posted a clip of the segment on X where he criticized Biden’s assertion that he must wait for a law passed from Congress to grant him the authority to secure the southern border. However, Abbott suggested that the U.S. Constitution grants Biden the authority to act immediately. In light of President Biden’s inaction, the Texas governor noted that his state must continue to take the matter into its own hands.
“Biden claims he needs new laws from Congress to secure the border. This is FALSE. Under the U.S. Constitution, Biden can take action TODAY to secure the border and stop this invasion. He has failed to do so, which is why Texas continues to take action to defend our border,” Gov. Abbott wrote on X, sharing a video of the Fox News segment with Bartiromo.
During the interview, Abbott further expanded on his claim that Biden does not require Congressional authorization to take action on securing the border. The governor cites the former Trump administration, which took decisive action in an attempt to disincentivize illegal immigration.
“Biden says in his Congress to give him the power to do whatever he needs to do to secure the border. The fact is, as we all saw from what President Trump did, the President of the United States has the power,” Abbott stated.
Abbott continued, emphasizing that Joe Biden, by law, is obligated to protect the country from rampant illegal border crossings. As the federal government fails to fulfill this duty, the Texas governor claims that he has the right to take the necessary action to defend the interests of the state he was elected to lead.
“I must emphasize this. There is an obligation, there are laws in the United States that require the president to deny the illegal entry of any illegal immigrants. And then if they do come to the United States, he has a legal obligation to detain those illegal immigrants. Joe Biden is failing at both of those duties and that’s exactly what gives Texas the authority to make sure that we can step up and secure our own border and protect our own state through self defense,” said Abbott.
Furthermore, Abbott praised former President Donald Trump during the interview, applauding his administration’s efforts to curb illegal immigration. The governor was discussing comments from Trump that highlighted his rhetoric toward improving the United States should he get reelected.
“He has a proven record about what he did when he was president. Remember, when he was president, he implemented poor policies that led to the lowest illegal border crossings in 14 years,” Abbott stated. Watch footage of Abbot’s interview below.
