As the situation at the border rages out of control in the eyes of many on the right, President Joe Biden’s Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, has declared that America actually needs more migrants to fill a supposed labor shortfall. Secretary Mayorkas made those comments during an interview with the New York Times.
Speaking during that interview, Secretary Mayorkas opined on how wonderful it would supposedly be if America opened legal immigration and migration pathways, as that would enable more job seekers to enter the country and fill the supposed labor gap. Left out of his calculation was how that might impact the wages of American workers.
Making those claims to the New York Times, Secretary Mayorkas said, “Wouldn’t it be more orderly, and wouldn’t it be responsible governance to be able to deliver a lawful pathway to fill what we have, which is a labor need, and cut the exploitative smugglers out and give individuals a path to arrive lawfully, safely, in an orderly way, to perform labor that we need? They can send remittances home. They can return home when their work is done. Isn’t that an element of a workable immigration system?”
During the New York Times Magazine interview, Secretary Mayorkas bizarrely blamed the GOP for the crisis and argued that it is their comments about the open border that is encouraging mass migration. He said, “If one wants to speak of rhetoric and the message it sends, what do you think the message is when a politician stands up and says the border is open, which it isn’t?”
Emphasizing that ridiculous claim by pointing to TikTok, he said, “Those words are then taken by the smugglers that exploit the vulnerable. They know how to reach desperate people, and they use those words as truth to drive human behavior. They communicate via TikTok and other channels: Representatives of the American people are declaring that the border is open.”
Also during the interview, Mayorkas attacked Texas Governor Greg Abbott, accusing him of using the migrants as “pawns” in a political battle. He said, “I call on Gov. Abbott to follow the law as the courts direct. I call upon Gov. Abbott to communicate and coordinate with his fellow governors in other states. I call upon Gov. Abbott to not use human beings as political pawns.”
Further, Mayorkas accused Gov. Abbott of not cooperating with federal officials to deal with the border, saying, “It is the responsibility of government officials to govern, and it is unconscionable for a public official to deliberately refuse to communicate, collaborate and coordinate with other public officials with the intent to purely create disorder.”
Gov. Abbott, for his part, has argued that he tried to work with the Biden Administration, even giving them a list of “immediate solutions” for the border crisis, but that Biden declined to even respond, much less take action. “I met him on a tarmac in El Paso and talked to him directly about what was going on. I handed him a letter that had in it immediate solutions that he could take that would immediately secure the border, without the need of any new law to be passed. Despite the fact that I handed him all-together eight different letters, he has refused to ever respond. My point I’m telling you is that we have laid down the precursor of what’s called Article Four, Section Four of the United States Constitution to show that we have been invaded and we have demanded support from the President to safeguard our state and they have refused to do so eight times. And that authorized me to declare an invasion under Article One, Section Ten of the Constitution to make sure that Texas is going to be able to use every tool in our arsenal to defend our state,” Gov. Abbott said.
