Though many think that California Governor Gavin Newsom could be angling for the Oval Office, during a recent interview with Jonathan Karl on ABC, Newsom was all in on the Biden bus. So in, in fact, that even Karl shut him down over his claim that Biden has had one of the most successful first terms for a president in American history.
Speaking on that, Governor Newsom said that he, as a Democrat, is working to “lift up the issues, the successes — the extraordinary successes of the last three years, the Biden-Harris administration, and then we drive contrast [with the results of Republican leadership].”
Continuing, Governor Newsom argued that President’ Biden’s job in fighting for reelection is easy because he has “the receipts” of how well things are going and have gone under his presidency. Newsom said, “It’s not even a complicated campaign. We have the receipts. We have the best three-year record of any modern American presidency, period, full stop. And you look at the issue, issue by issue, they poll overwhelmingly, the American people support what Biden has done.”
Karl, to his credit, pushed back on Newsom’s cheery narrative about how great things are going under Biden. Commenting that the president’s approval rating is at rock bottom, Mr. Karl absolutely shut down Newsomn’s nonsense when he shot back, “Except for the big thing, approval. Biden’s approval is historically low. Why is that?”
The obvious answer is that things aren’t going as well as what Biden and his cronies claim, though that’s not what Newsom admitted, of course. Rather, he tried to dodge the question and not speak about the president’s approval rating, other than to say that conditions have “been hard, globally, the last six, seven years.”
Governor Newsom then reverted to praising President Biden for his supposed accomplishments, claiming that Biden has “delivered” on some vague achievement related to his “economic strategy.” Newsom said, “The economic strategy, as this president’s put together, were all things Republicans dreamt of, but never delivered. He’s delivered.”
Similarly, when Karl pressed Newsom on the state of things at the border, Newsom first gave vague excuses for Biden and then tried to blame Republicans. “Well, I think you have to deal with the cards that are dealt. You’ve got to deal with the reality on the ground. And you have to have a comprehensive conversation around this, across the spectrum, the push and the pull,” he began.
Continuing, he got to blaming Republicans for not wanting to give mass amnesty for illegal immigrants, saying, “And that’s around the fundamental issue, immigration reform. It’s not just border security. The president put out a comprehensive strategy, a pathway to citizenship along with lines of their former hero, Ronald Reagan, to address the reality on the ground.”
Newsom then jumped behind the border deal Biden wants signed, saying, “That’s what the president of the United States has put up in front of Congress. And they refuse to act. They’re just promoting an agenda to disrupt and find a crowbar to put in the spokes of the wheels of the Biden administration to disrupt any progress on this because they don’t want progress, period.”
