Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently traveled to Spain to meet in Madrid with Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares. While there, she was caught on tape trying to dance “La Macarena” at a party with Los del Rio, the duo that made the song and its catchy tune and dance popular and infamous in the mid-1990s. The incident occurred on January 19.
The Hillary attempting to dance incident was caught on tape and posted to Instagram, showing Clinton being pulled in front of a group to dance with the band. The incident occurred in Seville, where Clinton traveled after her Madrid meeting to attend a large party in her honor at Seville’s iconic and historic Palacio de Dueñas.
Hola.com, reporting on the background of the party, noted that a Spanish aristocrat, Eugenia Martinez de Irujo, hosted the party alongside her husband, Narcis Rebollo. de Irujo is the Duchess of Montoro. Those who showed up included “prominent figures such as Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, President of the Junta de Andalucía, and celebrities like David Bisbal and Los del Río.”
Then, during the party, the duo behind Los del Rio, Antonio Romero Monge and Rafael Ruiz Perdigones, took center stage of the party to sing their “Macarena” hit, much to the delight of the guests. It was as they sang and the crowd clapped to the rhythm of the song that Clinton was pulled up on stage, with a singer inviting her to dance on stage.
He got on the stage and joined them, but it was, in the words of The Olive Press, a Spanish news outlet, an incident where Clinton brought “the cringe.” That’s because, though she was evidently in good spirits, she didn’t get the choreography or seem to grasp the moves to the famous dance, making the whole spectacle extremely embarrassing to watch.
Further, the former Secretary of State not grasping the moves or knowing the dance was odd because, as The Olive Press noted, it was constantly played during her husband’s re-election events in the mid-1990s, when it was at its most popular. In fact, The Olive Press notes, the song was played so much by the Clinton Campaign that it was an unofficial anthem of his 1996 re-election campaign.

Posting about the incident on Twitter, The Olive Press joked that Hillary “brought the cringe.” It said, “Hillary Clinton brought the cringe with her during a trip to Sevilla on January 19. She was called up to dance La Macarena with the original singers from Los del Río. She tried it gamely despite clearly having no clue of the iconic dance that accompanies the song.”
A commenter on the video noted that, were Hillary more in touch with the trends of normal people in the 90s, she would have known the moves. That commenter said, “If she had only had a child in public school in the US in the 1990s, then she’d know this dance and how to line to to Achy Breaky Heart and the Electric Slide.”
