The Georgia Senate voted on Friday, January 26, to authorize a corruption investigation into Fulton County DA Fani Willis. The investigation will be conducted by a special committee that the lawmakers authorized. It was granted subpoena powers to conduct the investigation, but it is only able to make recommendations based on its findings and cannot directly sanction DA Willis.
The vote in the state Senate to authorize the special committee was 30-19, and the Republican senators behind it said that it is necessary to determine whether DA Willis misused state funds when conducting her investigation into former President Trump and more than a dozen members of his 2020 campaign team and legal staff.
Such is what the Associated Press reported in its article on the vote and committee, quoting Georgia Senator Matt Brass of Newnan, a Republican, as saying, “This has to do with following state funds.” State Senator Newnan continued, “We want to know where is our money going.”
The committee is unique in Georgia, as it will be able to both issue subpoenas and require those who testify before it to testify under oath. Both of those powers are rare in Georgia, not being routinely used by any other legislative committee, the AP reported. The panel will be composed of six Republicans and three Democrats.
The Republicans behind the investigation pointed to, as evidence that DA Willis could have misused state funds, evidence that she and Wade traveled to Miami together in October of 2022 and San Francisco in April of 2023. It is alleged that DA Willis and Nathan Wade, a special prosecutor she appointed for the case, have had a sexual relationship from which she financially benefited, with those tickets and travel plans being evidence of such a relationship.
Speaking about the impropriety of DA Willis’ alleged relationship with Wade and why it matters, State Sen. Brandon Beach of Alpharetta, a Republican, said that her employment of Wade is a “prosecution for personal profit scheme.” Continuing, he said, “I believe this scheme — prosecution for personal profit — was a fraud against the court and it was a fraud against you as a Georgia taxpayer.”
Georgia Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones commented on the matter as well, telling Breitbart News, “The Georgia legislature has a responsibility to hold public officials accountable.” Lt. Gov. Jones continued, “Recent reports have been deeply troubling, and I appreciate Sen. Dolezal’s leadership on this issue.”
It’s not just Georgia’s politicians who are angry about the DA Willis issue and demanding oversight. One Fulton County resident, for example, recently appeared at a Fulton County Board of Commissioners meeting and said, during the public comment period, “Apparently guys like me need to court Fulton County female executives if we want to free wide at all paid expense. Up here, apparently, we need to pursue . . . Willis or maybe the executives and other departments if we want to full ride and full pay.”
He continued, “I’m requesting a financial audit to be done by the county auditor of the district attorney’s office immediately. There is no way that you get more money when you’re spinning money allegedly for unnecessary and frivolous purposes.” Watch him here:
