Recent reports from Chinese state media suggest the country is anticipating former President Donald Trump to return to the White House for a second term. According to the Chinese state-run newspaper Global Times, the world should prepare for Donald Trump to win the presidential election later this year.
Trump recently bagged a decisive win at the Iowa caucuses, securing the largest margin in the history of Republicans competing at the event. Polling numbers further corroborate the results of the Iowa Caucuses, demonstrating Trump’s unquestionable popularity among Republicans, making it all the more likely he will secure the primary nomination.
According to reports from the newspaper, Chinese political experts have asserted that the former president does not face any substantive challenges from inside the Republican party, where they also question whether Joe Biden is a viable candidate to defeat Trump. The Global Times reported:
Chinese experts believe that judging from the current situation, Trump is unchallenged within his party, and once the general election phase begins, Biden may not be a strong opponent for Trump. This means the world may need to prepare for the possibility of Trump returning to power and a more divided US with fighting between the political parties getting worse.
The Global Times further reported on the opinion of Lü Xiang, a research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, who asserted that the Democratic Party has sought to hinder Trump’s presidential campaign through indictments and lawsuits. Xiang further claimed that Republicans are countering these efforts by conducting investigations into Hunter Biden. However, the research fellow noted that available polling data indicates Trump has a strong chance in a rematch against President Biden. “The polling data in the US is quite transparent, and Trump’s approval ratings indicate that he is still a very competitive candidate. The world should be prepared for this,” Xiang said.
However, many in China are apprehensive about the possible return of a Donald Trump presidency due to the America-first agenda and tough-on-China stance. While campaigning in New Hampshire this week, Trump suggested that Beijing was concerned about his prospects.
“I felt very badly for them. China had a crash yesterday in their stock market. You know why? Because I won Iowa,” Trump said. “Literally, as soon as those numbers started coming in yesterday, they had a crash – of big – one of the worst numbers that they’ve had in years.”
After easily winning the Iowa Caucuses, Donald Trump offered a hopeful message for Americans, seeking to unify the country in a time of stark political polarization. The leading Republican primary candidate promised to “straighten out all of the death and destruction that we’re witnessing” while instructing the GOP to “come together and straighten out the world and straighten out the problems.”
Simultaneously, Trump congratulated the other Republican candidates. “I want to congratulate Ron and Nikki for having a good time together. I think they both actually did very well.” Trump continued praising Vivek Ramaswamy for his impressive campaign, stating, “I also want to congratulate Vivek because he did one hell of a job. He came from zero…that’s an amazing job.”
