According to the Colerain Township Police Department, a student attacked a teacher while on an “unknown drug” inflicted a “major brain injury” on the attacked teacher. The teacher has since had to undergo brain surgery at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. There, the surgeons removed her skull cap to help prevent brain damage from swelling.
Beginning its statement on the incident, the Colerain Police Department described when and where the assault occurred. It wrote, “On January 4, 2024, at approximately 2:18 p.m., Colerain Township Police School Resource Officers at Colerain High School (8801 Cheviot Road) were alerted that a teacher had been assaulted by a student in a classroom.”
Continuing, it noted that the injured teacher had to be transported to the hospital by emergency services personnel, writing, “The teacher received serious injuries during the assault and was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center by Colerain Township Dept. of Fire and EMS personnel.”
Next, the department noted that an as-yet-unnamed 16-year-old student was the perpetrator of the attack, writing, “An investigation conducted by Colerain Township Police led to a 16-year-old student being charged with Felonious Assault and will also face discipline from the school district.”
The student was treated, presumably for the side effects of the drug that had been ingested, and then promptly taken to the local juvenile detention center to be held. The department wrote, “The juvenile was taken to the hospital, treated, and released into police custody. The student was then transported to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center.”
The police then assured members of the community that the incident was not connected to any larger or ongoing threat to the community’s safety, writing, “Northwest Local Schools has confirmed that the incident was isolated and that there is no current threat to the school community regarding the matter. The district remains resolute in their commitment to providing a safe and nurturing environment for all students and staff.”
The police also noted what resources had been made available to those staff members and students impacted by the horrifying attack, saying, “On Friday morning, counselors were made available to support the staff and students who were emotionally impacted. On-going support will continue to be provided for those who need it.”
Concluding, the police asked for those with any information about the incident to provide help to the department, writing, “The incident remains under investigation by the Colerain Police Department and Northwest Local School District. If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact Colerain Police at (513) 321-COPS.”
According to Fox 19, a local media outlet that reported on the incident, it was an initial police investigation into the matter which revealed that the student “ingested an unknown drug” and became “distraught,” then proceeded to attack the teacher and punch the teacher “multiple times in the head,” causing the major brain damage.
