Michael Tait, lead singer of the Christian band the Newsboys and a member of the rap group DC Talk, discussed how a high school sermon about Hell brought him to Christ and began what has been a long and fruitful journey in Christian music. Tait, who was raised in a Christian home, said that this sermon during his last year in High School is what finally got him to buy into wanting a life with Christ.
Tait grew up as one of nine children being raised by a father who was a pastor. The 57-year-old, from Maine, attending a private Christian school and insists that it was there, and not at home, where he finally heard the sermon that made him decide to fully turn his life over to Christ. His story is one that many Christians will be able to identify with.
In an interview with CBN News, Tait said, “He preached on the subject of Hell. And how real Hell is, how beautiful Heaven is, and how you can’t get saved on the back of your dad or your mom… It’s not osmosis. It’s a thing we have to be one-on-one with God.”
It was that very same day that Tait changed his life, no longer coasting along through osmosis, as the preacher had referred to it, and now seeing his own relationship with God. Tait says that he went to pray immediately after the sermon and decided to become a real follower of Christ then and there.
Tait was also sure to admit that he had not been a perfect servant since that day roughly 40 years ago. However, he is also incredibly grateful that he has been forgiven through Jesus Christ and that God is willing to love him despite his sins.
He said, “God has been so faithful to this boy, so faithful to me when I had been grossly unfaithful more than once. But he keeps bringing me back to the cross… God speaks to me through my voice. How I feel when I sing or what I sing, it comes back at me like a boomerang.”
Tait continued on, saying that he can feel the forgiveness from God in the way that his life has continued to be great. In his music, and the rest of his life, he can feel God’s love. He said, “God goes, ‘I love you, boy. Stay the course. It’s OK. I will never leave you nor forsake you. Confess your sin. Right your wrongs and keep walking forward.'”
He also discussed how it feels to be constantly in the public eye and in a position to be seen as an example in the Christian community. Being on stage proclaiming the truth of God’s Word and constantly at the center of attention, he still embraces that challenge all the time. He explained, “It gets tough sometimes. But, to whom much is given, much is required. I will never shun that.”
