Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito are two of the biggest stars of our generation. Both actors have starred in blockbuster after blockbuster, and have also had very successful careers off of the big screen. Schwarzenegger retired from acting after winning the California governorship as a Republican from 2003 to 2011 before unretiring and returning to his signature roles of action hero, both on the big screen and on streaming.
For Danny DeVito, he starred in the highly successful series Taxi before heading to the big screen and scoring one smash after another in the comedy genre before landing the role of Frank Reynolds on the groundbreaking comedy “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” from 2005 until the present. However, there’s one thing the two stars share, and that’s the 1988 mega-hit comedy “Twins.” The movie was a box office smash, starring the unlikely duo as two genetically engineered fraternal twins separated at birth.
The buddy-comedy grossed $111 million at the box office. While that doesn’t sound like much in 2023, in 1988, it was enough to become the 5th highest-grossing movie of the year. A sequel was considered, but when The Terminator star won the California election in 2003, any talk of another Twins film was scuttled. After exiting the Governor’s Mansion, Schwarzenegger, now 76, restarted his acting career, and talks of a Twins sequel heated back up.
A sequel called “Triplets” was reportedly in the works until the film’s original director, Ivan Reitman, died in 2022 at the age of 75. The rumored sequel was supposedly adding Eddie Murphy to the cast as the third genetically engineered brother. However, in May, Schwarzenegger reported that the sequel wasn’t happening and that Reitman’s son Jason wasn’t interested in the project. The Terminator star said that Reitman “literally stopped the project when his father died.”
For now, the proposed sequel appears doomed, but that didn’t stop the two friends from taking pictures and posting them to Instagram after Schwarzenegger visited DeVito and his daughter Lucy on the set of their Broadway play called “I Need That.” The “True Lies” star posted: “My brother! It was fantastic to see Danny on Broadway in I Need That. He and Lucy and everybody involved kept the audience entertained, laughing and loving every minute – one of the best plays I’ve ever seen, a true spectacle with heart!! I can’t wait to work together again.”
If Triplets gets breathed new life at some point, it will be the culmination of something DeVito felt should’ve happened two decades ago. In a November interview, DeVito voiced his desire to work with Schwarzenegger again by saying the former politician “should have done Twins 2 instead of becoming governor.” The Always Sunny star hinted that he and Arnold “have a little thing going, a little project that we’ve been chatting about.”
The project apparently isn’t connected to Twins, and DeVito said: “No, it’s just two friends, two guys. Because we have a good time together. We complement each other in a lot of ways. I am way stronger than he is.” DeVito still holds considerable popularity because of Always Sunny, and Schwarzenegger is an action legend. One last project between two aging legends would be a welcome sendoff, even if they aren’t Twins any longer.
