Recently, a liberal Democrat Chicago alderman expressed his frustration with the Biden administration over the ensuing migrant crisis. Throughout the Biden administration, illegal immigration has seen a significant spike, where migrants are piling into America’s cities and overwhelming local infrastructure.
Chicago’s 2nd Ward Alderman Brian Hopkins appeared on CNN’s “CNN News Central,” where he addressed Biden’s handling of the border crisis. Hopkins noted that the president’s response to the issue was “unacceptable” and that he had “lost patience” with the administration.
“I have to be optimistic. You know, I’m a Democrat, but I’ll say the Biden administration has absolutely dropped the ball. I’m not going to let them off the hook,” Hopkins said. “They have left us in the ditch with this and that’s unacceptable.”
Hopkins further criticized Biden for his administration’s inaction on the issue. However, he noted that it isn’t too late to take substantive measures to address the migrant crisis. The alderman did emphasize that action should occur imminently as the cities struggle to get a grip on the issues presented by the influx of immigrants.
“Where’s the federal government been? Where has the Biden administration been? You know, it’s not too late to do the right thing but every day that goes by while we let the border remain open and while we let cities try to address this humanitarian crisis, it gets worse by the day,” Hopkins said. “I’ve lost patience, as you could probably tell,” he stated.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also weighed in on the issue, explaining how the migrant crisis is a nationwide problem that cities must address in the absence of funding from the federal government.“[W]ithout real significant investment from our federal government, it won’t just be the city of Chicago that won’t be able to maintain this mission; it’s the entire country that is now at stake,” Johnson said.
Chicago certainly isn’t the only city contending with the unfettered inflow of migrants. The American Tribune recently reported on an update from New York City Mayor Eric Adams, illustrating the strained resources in the Big Apple.
According to Adams, the migrant crisis in New York City is beginning to diminish the quality of life as the city struggles to maintain the necessary resources to provide for its residents. “We’ve seen the erosion of the quality of life that we’ve improved on in such a short period of time of this administration. And we have been impacted,” Adams said .”For, for many months, we were able to keep the visualization of this crisis from hitting our streets. But we have reached a breaking point, we no longer able to do that, because of the volume in numbers.”
Adams cited statistics on the inflow of migrants, providing context to the scale of the issue. “Just last week, we had 3900 People that arrived here, we are averaging anywhere from 2500 to close to 4000 a week,” Adams continued.“And if you do the math, you see that’s 8000 every two weeks, potentially 16,000 a month that we must feed, clothe house, educate children, and all the services that you would give a normal adults and we’re seeing that play out on our streets of New York. And that is what the breaking point looks like what we are experiencing right now.”
