Country music star Carrie Underwood talked about her Christmas plans and what the season is all about for her now that she is a mother. Underwood, a vegetarian, also discussed the way that she goes about cooking her Christmas meals so that the meat-eating men in her family also have dishes that they enjoy all meal long.
Underwood is married to Mike Fisher, a former NHL player who spent his career playing for the Ottawa Senators and the Nashville Predators until his retirement in 2018. Fisher and Underwood have two sons together and reside in Franklin, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville. In a YouTube clip, Underwood described the family’s Christmas traditions.
Carrie began by discussing the food plans that she has in store for her family on and surrounding Christmas Day. Underwood said, “Generally, we do a lot of traveling around Christmas. We’ll go see either my family or my husband’s family. I’ll spend all day cooking. I’ll make a small turkey even though I don’t eat turkey. I’ll just make a ridiculous amount of food.”
That wasn’t all, though. It seems that her Christmas revolves around family, both those living under her roof and the extended family that she makes a concerted effort to visit each year. They find time to squeeze in some present openings, but that is about all they do other than spend time with their loved ones. Underwood explained, “We wait for Santa and open our presents, and then we’re off to see the next group of family.”
She continued, “It’s just all about watching it through my sons’ eyes and getting to spend time with family.” That spirit is what led her to look so joyful in the video, as she really seems to grasp the most important part of the Christmas season. In a time when Americans are pummeled with consumerist propaganda all day long, Underwood knows the importance of time with family.
One of Underwood’s favorite Christmas memories was shared by Fox News, as she described the scene when she played a song titled “Little Drummer Boy” for her family in the car. This was a special rendition of the song that was on Underwood’s newest Christmas album a couple of years ago but featured her son Isaiah singing.
She said, “We were all just so excited. I was like, ‘I’m not going to send it to him right when I got it.’ I was like, ‘I’m going to go home, and we’re all going to listen to it in the car.’ That’s where I always listen to my stuff that I record. We went in the car and Isaiah got to hear himself back for the first time. It was just a great moment for all of us — sitting in my SUV listening to his sweet little voice.”
Hopefully, this can be a lesson for fans of Underwood to help them know that the Christmas Season is more about the family and memories than gifts and purchases. This won’t be taught in advertisements, unfortunately, but Underwood is so sure that family is the best part of the Holidays.
